out of state duck hunt/ trip advice
Posted by guesswho on 8/26/14 at 3:59 pm00
Who all is going out of state this year?
I am going out of state and this is first time I plan to hunt North Dakota. Anyone have any tips? What layout blinds do you like?

Are you doing a DIY? I was thinking about going to KS for a DIY, but I really don't have the gear for dry field hunting.
I have only used a layout twice so I can't really help.
We may try a late season guided goose hunt though.

I am doing a DIY. I have never been neither have buddies I am going with. So defiantly a shot in the dark. I went to cabelas on Sunday and looked at layout blinds. I am leaving towards the avery finisher. I bought some goose decoys and duck decoys for the fields. I have plenty of floaters.

There was a thread, you must have been slacking on your participation on the board at that time. We filled up in less than a week.
We are heading north Oct 15 and hunting North Central SD.

Averys are good blinds. We used the Avery Migrator. I have hunted in North Dakota twice over the last three years. Lots of public land, but make sure it is not posted. There will be a lot of other out of staters.
We hunted out of layout blinds in dry corn fields mainly. Resist the temptation to hunt the big water. You may get one good hunt like that, but you will flush the birds to other waters and never see them again. Do a lot of driving looking for birds in the evenings when not hunting. Look for fields they fly over or feed in between large bodies of water. Good binoculars will be worth the weight in gold.
We used full body duck decoys and put some around the blinds. Also threw in some goose decoys on the edges.
Depending on time of year, will obviously be very cold. Be very careful if you are bringing a dog. They can have a hard time keeping up their body temp with freezing water and howling winds.

Nope. We only hunted the dry fields. We never hunted directly on water. You will chase the birds away if you hunt directly on the water. Seen it happen a bunch. No need to hunt the water. Drove into fields with truck and trailer, set out blinds and decoys then moved the truck.
