Crazy being judged as a professional.

In school you get a grade, so it's easy enough to judge your preparation. In the real world you give pitch or present the closing of the last job, only to be judged by procurement of more work. You could kill it and they just don't have the budget or are focusing a different direct and you fail on the same level of just being unprepared or not producing.
It's just an empty feeling when it's over since your judgement is still pending. If the contract comes in next fiscal year, you did great, if not...fail. Tough to make Cs as a professional.

Someone needs to read outliers.

how can you be judged on something that is out of your control

you can't control results but you can control being prepared and creating as many opportunities as possible. nobody bats 1.000 but if you can get more ABs you can get more hits

How can you not? You either get the next project or you don't.

if its not in the budget then it's not in the budget. It has nothing to do with your presentation or preparation.

Yea? I never thought I'd be in business development, but I guess you aren't worth much if you aren't.

Sure it does. If you provide enough value to your employer, they'll find a way to keep you.

Rule #1: Everyone is in sales.

are we talking about getting fired vs winning a contract or a bid?

You're talking about what. You're talking about... Bitching about that sale you shot, some sonofabitch who don't wanna buy land, some broad you're trying to screw, so forth. Let's talk about something important.

Either way, if you provide enough value to your employer (or client) they'll find a way to keep you. But yes, I do understand that there are circumstances beyond the control of the OP at play. Which is why I suggested him reading outliers.

Business development is tought at times man. No instant gratification for your efforts. Keep pushing

I'm not getting fired. I produced a small effort, <100 hrs total, document and pitched it to the customer today. My company wants it to turn into more work. If it does I was successful, if not I, and I'm sure my bosses, would consider it a great opportunity lost...and that's directly proportional to my performance.

Let's talk about something important. Put. That coffee. Down. Coffee's for closers only. You think I'm fricking with you? I am not fricking with you. I'm here from downtown. I'm here from Mitch and Murray. And I'm here on a mission of mercy. Your name's Levine? You call yourself a salesman you son of a bitch?

I've lost plenty of contracts and bids due to market and financial decision. Was out of my control, nothing I could have done could have saved the deal.......How does that make me a failure? It doesn't. I move on to the next one and keep that client in arms length so when the next deal comes along I'm right there back in the running.
