per CBS Sports' Matt Moore

Things I agree with:
quote:

(2013-14) was just a cavalcade of misfortune

quote:

Tyreke Evans really did seem to show some genuine development both as a leader and as a player

quote:

the Pelicans haven't compromised their future. They still have cap space. They still have an elite player under the age of 25. They have some talented guards and versatility. Adding Asik helps them

Things I disagree with:
quote:

The Pelicans weren't good when they had most of the whole team together

quote:

Al-Farouq Aminu, a starting-caliber young wing who was underrated last year. That's the one that's really going to hurt them

quote:

Losing Aminu was a real blow to the team

The article was not bad at all. You're nitpicking with your gripes. When you view them in context, they make sense.

I'm not sure about the Evans bit though. Leader? Hm..

yeah, we only had one of the most unstoppable offenses in the whole league

I can't believe anyone who analyzes basketball for a living could actually write this

Aminu has a reputation as a solid defender. Not sure it we've actually ever witnessed that, but that's the word on him. Given our luck, he'll bust out in Dallas just like Ariza did in Washington.

Solid article and a nice grade. I liked this part..

"How you feel about the Pelicans' summer basically comes down to whether you buy into their core or not. If you think Holiday-Gordon-Evans-Anderson-Davis is a great combination and they can win, then adding Asik is just setting that team up for success better. If you think the roster is flawed and bloated with players overpaid, then you think this was a waste of a year."

Kind of nails it all on the head..

I think a limited role and a coach known for maximizing the talent he has on the roster probably will get a lot out of Aminu. Except for the fact that it's a division rival, I hope he does do well there. He took a lot of criticism while he was here filling a role he just wasn't up to and never complained or made excuses.

To be honest, we are going to miss his rebounding, versatility, and defense. He may not be elite in those areas but he's clearly better at those things compared to the players we have on the roster at his position right now.

We had to decided which direction to go and we chose the offense for the position.

That says nothing. A Cleveland line-up is #2. And they were bad last year.

The Pelicans were 6-5 when all of their best players were healthy. Holiday, Davis, Anderson, Evans, and Gordon.

And those wins were against Philly, Utah, Cleveland, Philly, Knicks, and Sacramento. All some of the worst teams in the league. Any time they played a decent team, they lost. Those came against the Spurs, Warriors, Clippers, Blazers, and Timberwolves.

The team was average at best, even when healthy. Although that is a very small sample size.

This is the non homerish view of it, but the small sample size is the key. Chemistry and IQ can go a long way to covering up individual weaknesses on defense, and as crazy as it sounds considering it was already high octane, the offense has a lot of room for improvement as well.

Someone's a little salty from his MSB thread and needed to lash out.

you sure about that? i thought it was around 8-4, but i could be mistaken.

regardless, chemistry takes time to build with an entirely new roster, and i think that will be an issue early in this season. Houston started off 5-4 last year with their roster healthy.

Aminu seems like a guy that you would like if he wasn't on your team and you only watched him once or twice during the season.

Aminu's the kid of guy where you look at his age (23) and his stats (7/6 in 25 mpg) and say "here's a guy who has a lot of potential."

then you watch him play and you pray he never touches the ball except to rebound and make a quick outlet pass or put back.

I just never remember watching a game and thinking "I'm really glad Al-Farouq Aminu is out there"

he had that one game against Dallas a few years ago where he had like 15 points and 20 rebounds. Maybe Dallas' GM remembered that one.

I can assure you Matt Moore watched quite a bit of Pelicans basketball last year. He does his homework and I guarantee you he can back up every one of those statements with statistics. The quote about not being very good referred to simply their W-L record, which was not very good. Aminu is a plus player in some regards, but was a terrible fit for this team and was asked to do far too much. I expect he will be a solid contributor in a much smaller role next year for Dalls.

You also have to remember that two of our key contributors (Ryno & Tyreke) were not really healthy for that stretch, either.

Yep. Would venture he watched as many games as some actual Pels fans. He's one of the national guys to pay attention to.

They will miss Aminu (especially on a vet minimum) when they play Davis/Anderson. No wing on the roster can balance Anderson out like Aminu. But he just wasn't what they wanted from that big wing spot.

I'm not sold on continuity helping Monty with the defensive scheme.
