Either he is wounded and survives or the assassin misses. In either scenarios Dr. King lives to a ripe old age and dies peacefully in his sleep.

What is the state of race relations in the United States today?

Serious commentary only please. Thanks.

The US would be a better place had he lived. Race wise at least.

He would have been destroyed for his Vietnam position.

That said, we probably would have never heard of Jesse Jackson.

I think he would have eventually been busted with his coke and hookers and would have become the mayor of DC instead of Berry.

That all depends on what the white liberals would want to happen. They'd do whatever was needed to maintain their strangehold on the black vote, including ruining his reputation if he got in the way of their race pimp lackeys who came later.

It's possible once legal equality was achieved he would have fell into the pit of wanting to constantly fight for something and been the Jesse Jackson we know today.

The other outcome would he would have eventually been called an Uncle Tom. When the Jesse Jacksons rose to power.

Either way race relations would be the same. The real culprit was the great society and the war on drugs that have put us where we are today, not the assination of one man, even if that man was a great man.

There are some interesting and valid points in this thread.

He did great things and lived at a time when the black family was more "intact." I find myself wondering had he lived would there be a greater focus on personal responsibility throughout the black community.

He was only one man but his singular focus could have done so much good.

Well said. From what little I have read, the destruction of the African American family unit had not truly begun yet (please correct if I am wrong). Though by no means a perfect man, he did much good with his focus on the non-violent response to racism and would (I believe) promote a positive way to help the plight of African Americans. We lost him much too soon.

I'll give my two cents.

I'm not sure where we'd be if MLK had lived. That is impossible to predict.

But, one question that I see and read a lot: "Why are race hustlers such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton the so-called leaders of the black community?"

When I see or hear this ... often, there are educated, successful black folks who say things like:
1) "There's a black community?"
2) "Who said they were?"

And such.

Here's a hypothesis:

- Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are propped up as the "leaders" and show up at various events to hustle, raise hatred and such ... to accomplish two things:

1) get rich by doing so.
2) keep black folks poor, often uneducated/ignorant, and voting Democrat.

And, the hypothesis is ... that this is EXACTLY how the Democrats want it.

Consider ... how much has it really improved for poor black people with Democrats "helping" them all the time?

How much has it improved for black people with "Reverends" Al and Jesse "helping" them?

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are able to help to solidify three things:
1) that poor black folks stay poor.
2) that those poor black folks blame white people and, more specifically, Republican white people ... and, hate them.
3) that these poor black folks continue to vote solid Democrat ... no matter what.

Because ... if the poor black people ceased to be poor and then became successful ... they would wise up and eventually vote with a more open mind.

Sure, there are plenty of successful, educated black people ... many still vote solid Democrat and some undoubtedly vote Republican ... but, those numbers are meaningless in comparison to the solid 90+% "old faithful" of the poor black folks voting (D).

So ... I would hope that if MLK had lived ... that the above would not be the case.

As a white man, I celebrate MLK and his day by stressing one paramount message of his to my children: "Judge a person by the content of his or her character ... not by the color of his or her skin."

I'm sure there are many on here that can more eloquently state all of the above ... but, it is late, and I am tired.

Some folks evidently aren't tired, though.

Just curious, but by whom? What competing movement?

I was only five when he died so I think of him being the most prominent civil rights leader of his time. What other competing narratives were out there? Black Panthers? Stokely Carmichael?

I think we lost so many opportunities for racial healing with his death.

I am not sure if he'd have sold out the civil rights movement like Jackson and Sharpton did.

I think race relations would be better had he not been assassinated that day in Memphis.
