Was listening recently to some sports show while I was traveling, and the announcer was advocating for basically unlimited rosters, saying there "there is so much talent right now that it doesn't make sense for a college team to suffer because a few players get injured."

I'd be against that. Schools like Alabama would stockpile talent and only a few schools across the country would be elite. There is no way a school like Marshall could even be uttered in the same sentence. The diversity in the talent pool would really shrink for smaller schools. One of the reasons we're at the current limit is 'Bama stockpiling in the past and hording talent.

On the other hand, NFL teams can call up players from developmental squads if someone gets injured.

Should a school like Marshall be uttered in the same sentence?

I don't think star recruits are just going to stay at a tip school and get buried on the depth chart. They will transfer to get playing time. This already happens at the current roster sizes so increasing the rosters would only increase this imo.

In a near future world of pay to play, I don't see the rosters getting any bigger.

Exactly. This isn't the 50's anymore. Kids want to play and some kid that can get time won't settle for being Bama's 5th string QB just because he used to go watch games there with Paw Paw growing up.

I don't have any particular objection to increasing roster sizes but don't really see the point. Increasing scholarship limits is impractical because money even at the top schools is finite.

85 scholarship and 105 total players is a pretty big roster.

No, Title IX is the reason. If you want to add 15-20 scholarships to football then you need to add another women's program.

Schools get 85 scholarships so as long as you allocate them appropriately, and identify and develop talent, a team should be 3 deep at every position with scholarship players.

If your second string players aren't good enough with 85 scholarships, would 100 make that much of a difference?
