Switched to AT&T family plan, and they have me financing a phone without asking

got on a family plan yesterday, went from paying $110 at verizon for 1 line to 150 at At&t for 2 lines and a tablet... i start to look at my receipt last night and realize that they have me paying for my phone on an installment plan, which was NEVER mentioned to me once, I wanted to just buy the phone outright like when starting a new contract, which is an option, I traded in my old phone and was told the cost of my new phone would be $75, I had a 4S so it seemed reasonable... come to find out, now I will be paying more than $150 a month because they have me on an installment plan to pay the FULL $699 for the phone over a 2 year period. never mentioned it once, rest of my family has been with At&t since it was Cingular.
I have a 14 day grace period i know that, so im not super mad or anything, but just a heads up for anyone doing any changes at AT&T, watch out for them trying to sneak this installment plan stuff in with you.
learn from my mistake

The real question is what did they do with your trade in phone money?

Sounds like the salesperson screwed up. Phones are free with a 2 year contract unless you upgrade during that 2 year contract then you are put on an installment plan.
I think they also put those with less than perfect credit on the installment plan instead of giving them the free phone.

well I have good credit, and the family member I am on it with has excellent credit, so i dont know what they were thinking if that was the reasoning
basically I just wanted to warn people to look over everything first, I figured we could trust them since we have been with "them" since cell phones were invented ha

It comes out the same as if you would have bought it outright. Do the numbers.
Trust me, I sat there for a long time the other day going over all the difference in plans. It's a solid setup. The money is no different.
I have 4 lines family and wife went from Android to Iphone. Bill went up $20/month for 2 years after a $50 fee. They didn't sneak it, you weren't listening and you thought you were getting a free phone.
How does getting a $699 product for $75 seem "reasonable"
Also: saw a T mobile commercial last night for 4 phone plan for $100 and they pay out your contract fee with other carrier. I'm thinking hard!

every time i have started a new contract, it has been pay $199 for whatever the latest phone is. so when trading in a near brand new s4 getting $125 for the phone seemed reasonable.
also no, paying $200 for the phone up front does not come out to the same as paying $699 over 2 years.

You basically had two options. Pay $199 for the phone and your bill be $150 or pay $44 for the phone and your bill is $150. Yes you're financing the phone over two years but you come out cheaper because your bill is around $150 either way but the upfront pricing is cheaper the way you did it.
I spent some time in there last week doing the same thing.

i dont care about the upfront pricing being cheaper, that is $500 more that i will be spending over 2 years.... WHY would i want to do that?

You signed the contract before you read it?

ATT is horrible as far as billing goes. If u want to but something, u can get someone on the phone 24 hrs a day. But it is really difficult if you have a problem with your bill

You're going to pay for the phone whether you do a 2 yr commitment or not. It's being subsidized into your monthly bill in little installments.
You didn't ask enough questions or simply wasn't paying attention.

I'm about to go look into these plans. I've got two iPhones on AT&T and two on Verizon. Need to get the monthly costs down. Spending 4k on phones each year is sickening.

TO GET A BRAND NEW UPGRADED $699 PHONE FOR 500!!
Here's the deal genius, go ANYWHERE on the internet and buy the new upgrade like the one you got and bring it to them and turn it on for free and give them their phone back.
Here's the catch, YOU WONT FIND THE PHONE FOR UNDER $699 ANYWHERE!
quit being a bitch, they don't give those phones away for $75!
And we don't know "WHY"! You did the deal, did you read it before signing it?
WHY did you leave your other carrier? I'll tell you, cause they fricking suck AND they wouldn't give you the upgrade to the new phone!

I think that's the way AT&T does it now. Instead of paying $40/month for your phone line and getting a 'contract discount' for your phone, you now pay $20/month for the phone line and $20/month for your phone for 2 years. If you don't upgrade your phone when you have paid it off, you're monthly bill goes back down. For people that get new phones every year or two, the payment is a wash. For people that keep there phones, they come out ahead.

All depends on how/if the contract changes. (losing unlimited data etc).
