Dundalk have been hit with a staggering €18k fine following their Europa League qualifier against Hajduk Split when a Palestine flag was flown at Oriel Park.

...

The UEFA match delegate in Oriel on July 17 had asked the club to have the flag removed before kick off with the game in danger of being delayed if this did not happen.

But during the game, the flag reappeared and UEFA have deemed this a breach of their rules.

It's understood that the Palestine flag is deemed political by UEFA because the conflict in the region is ongoing.

Update:

Celtic and St Johnstone fined as well

Only reason you even bother posting this is b/c Palestine flags are a regular thing at Celtic park.

Nope.

1. I find it extraordinarily stupid to fine fans waving the flag of a FIFA-member.

2. Last year, Atletico was fined €10k for racism.

3. If you fine a club like Dundalk this much, you have to start fining bigger clubs proportionally.

Or maybe because it is a ridiculous fine and there is a national flag at probably 95% of games around the world?

Should Barca be fined for their supporters flying Catalan flags?

What about Ajax?

B/c Ajax has legit ties to the Jewish Community and has been doing that for years.

Rangers fans have the star of David flag just to troll Celtic fans

I'm aware. Doesn't mean it's less of 'a political statement' to fly the flag.

Some Irish people are sympathetic for the Palestinians, because their situation with England could be seen as similar to the situation with Palestine/Israel. I guess they should have started flying the flag many years ago instead of just a few days ago, for it to be okay.

And Barcelona. And Athletic. And Hamburg. And Zenit. I can keep going.

My main problem is that Palestine is a FIFA member. How can flying the flag of a FIFA member be against the rules?

I remember seeing a Confederate flag once during a Spain game. That was odd.

Do you in any way think the fine is correct? Palestine's a FIFA member and the flag is on UEFA's site.

It's stupid to fine them

But my point still stands and seems to look spot on why this thread was created.

Except that (a) I make threads about stupid fines all the time and (b) I take it for granted that Celtic will be fined at least once per season.
