Will anything come of it? Remains to be seen.

Obama signaled he would review the programs at a White House news conference on Monday when he said he wanted to make sure police were purchasing equipment they actually needed because there is "a big difference between our military and our local law enforcement and we don't want those lines blurred."
A growing number of lawmakers have voiced concern about the militarization of U.S. police forces through programs administered by the Pentagon, Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security.

quote:

Key concerns include a clause in the program that requires police to use the equipment within a year, something the American Civil Liberties Union argues may give police forces an incentive to use the equipment in inappropriate situations. The program also does not mandate training for crowd control or other uses.

House of Representatives lawmakers defeated a bill to halt the 1033 program in a 355-62 vote in June, but concerns about the handling of the crisis in Ferguson have revived the reform effort.

Could just be posturing but at least people are talking

I agree too but it's sad it took a "racial" event to bring it about, the boston event was much worse in terms of police militarization

I'm ok with his review, but I'd much rather our police have military equipment ready to use if he isn't going to secure our borders. I'm also of the opinion that there needs to be far less reviews and much more action on pressing issues like Benghazi, IRS, Bergdahl, Fast and Furious, etc.

Honest question - why can't the republican governors of Texas and Arizona use their national guard to start enforcing the border? It's not like either one of them is a shrinking violet.

Hope they consolidate all the Federal forces and get rid of police for departments that don't need police.

FIFY.

The department of education actually has a swat team. That's a sign this problem is out of control and militarization of domestic law enforcement needs to be reined back in.

The 1033 program was begun in 1991 to help police forces in the "War on Drugs," and was revamped in 1997 to include counterterrorism activities. Chris Coyne, economics professor at George Mason University in Virginia, said the program expanded sharply after the 2001 hijacked airliner attacks. "Once it was in place, it led to opening the floodgates in an unquestioning manner to the state and local level. And people grabbed stuff because they could," Coyne said.

1. It is the Federal government's job to secure borders.

2. It's very expensive for states to do it alone.

3. Not enough Texas troops to effectively secure the border.

4. Texas did send 1,000 troops to help secure the border. But it is very expensive and there are not enough troops.

You do realize the so called "tanks" are nothing more than an oversized bullet proof vehicle. Their primary purpose is to transport people.

What legitimate reason they need armored personnel carriers? Contrary to police chiefs BS about increasing firepower, this is not a war zone. Nothing has changed in decades.

What do the Israeli police look like? Well that's what our police will look like in five years.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

City police and Sheriff's departments only need body armor and a handful of AR15s locked up for special occasions.

We have the national guard for anything that won't handle.

The only incident in my entire life where I recall the cops being outgunned and in a war zone situation was the North Hollywood Shootout and that was 17 years ago. That is one incident in the last 20 years where cops would have needed heavy stuff. Just one.

Podunk sheriff's Departments and the like don't need it. It is just cool toys for them to play with and act bad arse.
