Speaking of irony my turncoat son is shopping for a gaming laptop--he's looking a Lenovo 50 y.

I'm a little out of my field here ( obviously).
Specs--
4th Generation Intel Core i7-4710HQ Processor (2.50GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
-
Operating System
Windows 8.1 64
-
Display
15.6" FHD LED AntiGlare Backlight (1920x1080)
-
Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M 2GB
-
Memory
8.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM 1600 MHz
-
Hard Drive
Hybrid 1TB 5400 RPM+8GB

$1,150.

Can anyone recommended a significantly better gaming laptop in the $1,200 range?

You're not making him buy a mac?

The 1st thing you will get is to build a desktop, if you are set on a laptop you will then get some legit recommendations.

I'm also looking for a gaming laptop.

have two gaming desktops, but want something portable I think. Will also dock it when at the house.

Short of the video card, we give better laptops than that to "Fred" when he goes into the field for a few months

Look back through past threads that discussed this question

LOL no Mac. And I give him a hard time about it but I know for gaming has to go to the dark side.

Has to be a Laptop.

Do this.

EDIT: though to be honest, none of them beat Lenovo in price/specs.

There's a Lenovo on Newegg that's near identical to the on in OP, except double memory, same price. newegg exclusive. LINK

what would be the better video card to go with?

gtx 860m or the amd m290x? I have the 290x in my desktop, and have no problems with it, but going that route takes the i7 out of the equation.

so then the question would be, i7 or the A-10 from AMD

(I know that will open a whole new can or worms...)

Yeah, you're looking at those MSI's vs. the Lenovos.

Normally, I'd say put the CPU as a secondary priority to the GPU, but the M290x is not THAT much better than the GTX 860M, whereas the i7 just rapes the A10. The A10 is an odd choice for that laptop, and I'm guessing it was just a cost-cutting measure. While you would get better gaming performance out of the A10/290x laptop, you'd be overpaying for the GPU because of the crappier APU.

However, if we were comparing a system with an i7/860m vs. a system with an A10/870m for the same price, I'd choose the latter.

But with savings like this, how can I pass it up?

That's not a bad price, dollar discount or not. Not as good as the Lenovo price, but the MSI has a larger screen if that's your preference. And you can add an mSATA SSD to the MSI.

Might as well grab the 4k model lenovo Y50. Sure the 860m wont run games well, but you can easily drop it down to 1080p

I saw that, and got the feeling that Lenovo just commissioned a company to make the lowest production cost 4k panel possible, just to have a 4k laptop.

I normally don't care about newegg reviews, but there were some common complaints about the screen, such as excessive backlight bleeding and discoloration. The refresh rate is also apparently locked at 48hz.

Plus there's the whole issue of 4k resolution on a 15" screen, and certain applications not scaling. One reviewer trying to use an Adobe program described it as "like trying to read text off an ant's back." I imagine it's nice and crisp text, but you'd have to get right up on it to be able to read.

Yeah, 860M minimum for anything worth considering as a "gaming" laptop. And considering an 860M is similar to a 750 Ti with less memory bandwidth, I would try for an 870M, but expectations have to be somewhat lower for mobile performance. 860M going to do 60fps most modern AAA titles at medium or low quality (1080p).
