OT doctors- talking ligaments

So I was lifting on Monday, doing heavy snatches. I attempted a new 1 rep max and caught it sort of behind my head, and my arm took an awkward bend. I knew something was wrong and the next day, the inside of my elbow was swollen and bruised. I went to an orthopedic who said it was probably either a sprained or torn ligament (I forget what ligament but he said if torn, I would need tommy john). He told me I could schedule an MRI or wait it out a few weeks and see if it gets better. My arm is feeling better, I can actually fully extend it now. I have a brave for support and some meds to help the swelling. My question is- should I go on and have the MRI? Or what should I do?

If you're paying for it, sure.
If I'm paying for it, hell no.

I'd probably advise you get an MRI. If you are frequently active (sports, outdoors, etc) you run the risk of turning a smaller injury into a bigger one. Friend of mine had an Achilles injury and went a week without an MRI. Minor improvement but he was still concerned with his weakness so he got the MRI. Pretty significant tear which required a boot for 6 weeks.

basically what your doc is saying is that there is nothing to lose by waiting, but it could save a chunk of cash...
fwiw, I'm gonna bet that your heavy lifting days are over...

I would wait and see how you do and possibly do some PT. Unless you are a throwing athlete you probably don't need a ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction. Maximize nonoperative treatment.

If it's the medial aspect of your elbow and it is ligamentous in nature it is most likely your ulnar collateral ligament. Tommy John's surgery is the surgery to correct it.
Sucks. The good news is you should be able to throw 2 - 3 mph faster afterwards. Grats.

It's your ulnar collateral ligament, the repair is your choice.

The ligament he's talking about is the UCL (ulna collateral ligament).

I'd have to disagree with my colleague PTBob...
You will most likely die.
Sorry.

You don't need tommy john surgery unless your playing in the minor leagues or your elbow is unstable and dislocating.

The big thing is what do you plan on doing if you find out you have a UCL tear. If you don't have any pain and are able to do most activities, though probably won't be able to lift super heavy without pain or reflaring it up, are you gonna do surgery? Then why do you need the MRI to confirm what he and you likely already know? No need to waste time with imaging if you won't be doing anything about it or if the degree of injury will significantly alter your quality of life without some kind of intervention.

Always nice to see the correct diagnosis, especially by Post #2 of a thread.

If it's feeling better, don't do anything about it. MRI is a great test. It's also expensive as all get-out. Here's your treatment algorithm:
1) Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation, NSAIDs (ibuprofen, prescription dose. Speak with your doctor about it) x7 days
If still hurting:
2) Begin rehabilitation. If this is a prior injury and you know a decent rehab routine, by all means: repeat it. If it's not, ask for a PT referral. Continue NSAIDs for pain and inflammation. If pain and inflammation stop, discontinue NSAID regimen (prolonged use can lead to stomach ulcers) x6 weeks
3) If the pain and lack of range of motion persist 6 weeks out, consider imaging.
It sounds like you're somewhere between #1 and #2. An MRI would be a waste of money if you're paying for it. Even if it shows something, you would likely be referred to #2 before anything surgical would be done about it (most likely scenario, of course. There's a chance the doc is like "Oh. Hey. Let's go do surgery on that." But if you're currently describing "feeling better" and full extension, you likely don't have a surgical lesion, unless you mean something different by "better" than "on the path to feeling normal."
In short, wait it out. Work it hard. Put off the MRI.

You may want to consult an Optometrist for a second opinion.

You sound like and average Joe/ non-elite athlete. That specific surgery will not do you much difference so skip the MRI all together.

Schedule an appointment with your Gynecologist to get checked out.
