Are you busy? Just not want to go with that person? Don't like the restaurant?

I will say it is incredibly rude to start a thread and then not provide the necessary details for us to make a valid opinion.

That would be rude if you answered their invitation with that response. Going to have to come up with a better excuse than that.

"No Thank You. I have plans. Maybe some other time"..

It's true even if your plans are to be by yourself.

It's sincere since you are being nice.

They don't like to hang out with you even when you're paying.

You must be really lame.

Yeah maybe. This situation depends too much on the context to give a better answer

I'm in sales and make 3/4 appointments a day so I'm always faced with that. I always avoid it prior to and bring it up first.

I'll make an 11am appt and then say I have a lunch meeting at 12:30. Bam. Works every time

Of course if it's a big account of mine then yes we do lunch every once in a while but when you do it every day it gets old plus I don't want to be 400lbs.

I prefer to bring a sandwich and eat light.

I'm not old, but I am the same way.

So far, living alone has been the best decision I've ever made.

I have a friend who gets so angry when he asks to hang out and I say no, but I don't have other plans. I'm like I JUST WANT TO BE HOME. ALONE.

I work through lunch every day unless I have an appt outside the office. I take breaks while I'm on hold or waiting on a call or email, but if I go to lunch, I end up working a lot later, plus lunch time is when I get a lot more done without too many interruptions. I also need a heads up if I'm going to lunch. I plan the day and can't suddenly drop things to go to lunch last minute. I'm on hold right now.

If it's once in a while, no big deal. If you do this on a regular basis, I'd say it could be a sign of some sort of social anxiety disorder. Developing personal relationships with others is important, particular for career development.

Just my two cents, which is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Nothing worse than invasive friends.

With lunch, just say you brought your own lunch if you don't feel like going.

I just turned my boss down for lunch a few minutes ago. Isn't the first time though.
He thinks I'm on a "diet" anyway. I just count my macros, so I could easily go eat lunch. I just didn't feel like it and I brought my own.
He's usually the only person I ever turn down for lunch.

I could eat lunch everyday with a salesman but only do it about once every two months. Salesman I deal with know I don't want free lunch or a turkey at Christmas. I'll buy my own lunch and turkey. Sell me a good product for a good price , deliver it when you say you will and stand behind it if it breaks. I will be a loyal customer and you can take your wife to lunch on your expense account and tell the regional manager it was me.

If I do eat lunch I normally eat by myself or with my wife. We meet for lunch or about once a month enjoy a late Friday lunch and enjoy a couple glasses of wine. Other than that mostly I don't eat lunch.
