Catholics: Have you ever turned down the offer to be a godparent?
Posted by SportzIQ3235 on 8/21/14 at 10:24 am12
I have said yes to my previous three godchildren and the last I felt was a mistake in agreeing to. Now a 4th couple have asked and I do not want the responsibility. I am not a habitual church going catholic and I don't participate in the diocese. At this point I don't want the responsibility of another godchild.
Have any of you turned down the offer and how did that decision turn out?

Is it really that much of a responsibility?

You should turn it down. It's sad that godparent doesn't mean much these days. It should.

Nobody would ever ask this of me. Not even family.

Never been asked.
But I know people who have turned it down. It hurt the family but they just moved on from it.

No it isn't.
But if you don't want to do, simply decline.

I'm sure if you tell them you appreciate them asking but explain to them that you already have four they will understand. Do they know that you are already the godparent of four other kids?

Ermagherd, what if all these parents die and he has six kids to feed? Young parents die together all the time.

Seems kinda like a selfish move to me.
For 4 different people to ask you to be a Godparent you must be doing something right. What is so burdensome about being a Godparent that you'd consider it too much responsibility? Attend a christening/1st communion 7 yrs later/confirmation when they're 17/and maybe a wedding???

Yes. Make sure they know you are already spread thin on that front. But it isn't really much responsibility.

The parents can legally dictate this in a will.

Then educate others on all these cumbersome responsibilities of a Catholic Godparent.
