Should we push for crests next to our names? (Update: Dijkstra is the man)

I would rock the fighting cock next to my name. Would anyone else change their favorite team to their favorite soccer club if they had the option?

I would be down. Will it happen? Probably not. Would definitely draw a lot more people here if it happened.

yeah, I'd rock the Sporting crest
eta: in the mean time I'm gonna hop back onto the Mizzou logo instead of USA flag

If we do this, I say we go for an official thread that has a properly sized image of every requested team. We have a better shot of getting this through, if we do a lot of the work ahead of time.

I think they are about the right size on /r/soccer.

I don't reddit so I don't know about any of that

I bet I can get you to start.
I check the Spurs reddit every day for news. Usually some cool stuff there.
r/coys
I check the soccer reddit for the big transfers, but mostly for highlights. If there is a great goal/play that day, it is almost definitely on the front page.

It's a good idea, but if the mods aren't willing to add MLB teams, I'd say our chances of adding soccer crests are slim.

I'd be willing to work on getting them down in dimensions and data size if it'd help us get them. I worked a bit on getting the USA flag we have now ages ago. I don't remember if that ended up being the one we used.
Hell, I'll host them if needed.
EDIT: I went back and found the thread. Didn't use the flag I made. I still wish my efforts on these could have made it through, though:
I've also edited the name because I hated my old one.

Damn! I like your crests better!
But it wouldn't surprise me if they won't be a fan of detailed crests. Slows down the internet, I bet. You made have just provided the reason this won't get approved.

Looking back, I actually may have done the one we have now. I think the hyperlink just got switched. Not that it matters. I'm just surprised how quickly time flew by.
All reminiscing aside, I believe we could get it down to a decent size without crushing the servers. As a software engineer, I can't imagine a scenario in which a site of this size couldn't handle a few more icons. In fact, /r/soccer already does it well with damn near the exact sizes we'd need. With the community we have on the board, we could easily put in the time to get them done, even if we have to make a list of the ones we need and only do those. I'd be all in for starting with two leagues and working from there.
After looking back at this thread, a lot of the regulars now were here then pushing for the USA icon. After four years, I think it wouldn't be too much to ask to get some crests. shite, every half-arse college team gets one.
EDIT: I used /r/soccer icons to compare the sizing. It's completely feasible to get this done with minimal to damn near nonexistent impact. It'd just mean work naming them something like "iconTottenham" or "iconManUtd" and placing them in the icon directory that they've already got. A few tweaks may be needed outside of that, but nothing major.

So, I dug through my frames on the soccerbot subreddit used to distribute flair and got this. These are all unlicensed usage of the crests so it'd likely be fair game to split them up. It'd just require splitting them up spritesheet style and giving names to all of them.
It could easily be done in CSS if they used CSS sprite sheet techniques, but I'm pretty certain Chicken and friends store all icons separately as GIF files, which is a cardinal sin these days with the rise of PNG. Those icons should really be converted to PNG (which is lossless and compresses much better than GIF) or converted into a sprite sheet to allow for lightweight loading using CSS. The last one is something the admins really need to consider to minimize the bloat instead of loading a GIF for every icon. Putting aside my petty nerd condescending bullshite, we'd have to do this the old fashioned way that'd require the most work.
I could possibly split them into GIFS at a height and width of 20px, and if we had some volunteers, we could get them all named. Chicken could give us a naming standard to use, and we could give them back to him ready to integrate.

Neither should I. I should be working on something right now, but instead, I've taken up the call to arms. I've actually got them split into separate GIF icons. There's 500 of these bastards. How Chicken does this using GIFs is beyond me. That should be one of the things they do in their on-going process of updating the site. Now, it's just the task of naming these bastards. I may just organize them by league and then name them league by league.
Posted on 8/21/14 at 4:28 am to Dijkstra
I think you could probably start with MLS, BPL, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Celtic (You're welcome, TN Bhoy).
But if you've got the time to do 500, by all means, go for it.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing. I've already got almost all of the the leagues you mentioned knocked out. I've got the Championship half done as well. I could probably have those leagues done in an hour. I'll probably do the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A teams and Portuguese teams because I'm pretty sure I saw someone mention teams from those.
EDIT: I knocked out about 100, which was a pain in the arse. I've got the entire BPL, Championship, Bundesliga, and Celtic done.
