I bought one of these back after Christmas, and it worked fine for months. Even on the shitty U-Verse wireless I had at the time. Then it would lose the signal some, and I would have to unplug it and plug it back in and it would work fine for a few more weeks.

I cut cable and got Charter internet back in the spring, and hooked it up with my old router. Worked fine for a few more months. In late May I was having issues with it even finding a network when it scanned for wifi. It used to see my neighbors and mine, and I would just select mine. The old unplug/replug seemed to fix it for a few weeks at a time. The only time I noticed it being disconnected was if I hadn't used it in several days.

Went out of town this past weekend to visit my sick grandmother, and turned it back on the other night, and it worked fine. I was thinking I would have to unplug it. But it worked. I watched two episodes on it, then started the third one and it froze up about 5 minutes into it. It wouldn't connect at all. So I did the factory reset, and the same thing. No connections.

I've sent a customer service request to Roku, but has anyone else experienced anything like this? I think I got a Dud.

I've had 3 for going on 2.5 years now and haven't had any issues regarding connectivity. Probably just bad luck on your part...it happens.

The Roku 1 is only Wireless. They don't have a wired connection in them.

Amen.

If people understood the difference between wireless and Ethernet they'd stop having such a bad time.

Wireless...one collision domain for everyone!

Apparently I got a Dud. I sent in the request, mentioning my previous request with them from back in May with their Case ID #, and asked if they could replace it or if I could send it to them for them to look at/fix. I got a response back asking me what it showed as the MAC address, which was all zeroes. Then they said they would replace it. Asked me for my address and where I bought it from so they could process the replacement. Looks like I'll be getting a new one.

Mine doesn't suck. My wife can be playing around on her iPad, my girl watching cartoons on my kindle fire, and me streaming from the roku and nothing buffers. I was contemplating getting a Fire box and hardwiring it if the roku wasn't replaced though.

It doesn't suck for what you're doing, but it most certainly sucks compared to Ethernet

Yeah I know. I just don't get on a computer at home much.

What is this ethernet you speak of and how can I utilize it?

I have a Roku 1 and it freezes up quite often as well. Is this common?

You cannot use ethernet on a Roku 1. Explain your problem in a little more detail than "freezing up" as you did in the post below. Do videos buffer? Does it take a long time to scroll through menus? Bore me with the details.

Sometimes it just freezes up and others it buffers, it will stop in the middle of a movie. A lot of times it just won't play the movie that you selected. It could very well be user error, I have been trying to sell my SO on getting a couple of them and getting rid of direct TV but that's a nogo as long as the Roku doesn't function properly.

On the menus? Like, if you're moving your cursor/box/selector from app to app it will freeze? Sometimes when you select an icon it freezes instead of loading? Sometimes it freezes between browsing between two movies within Netflix?

And when you say "freezes up," what kind of time frame are we talking? 5 seconds? 5 minutes? indefinite requiring reboot?

Where does the problem most often occur? Does it occur in specific apps only? On the homescreen? Everywhere?

It freezes up long enough that you give up on the movie and go do something else. It doesn't do it all the time but it is maddening when it does. It happens mostly when you select a movie.

Based on what you're describing, the device is functioning fine and with plenty of "horsepower." It sounds like you're having network problems. Are you getting a strong signal there? What's your proximity to your router? What kind of router are you using (more than just a brand...preferably "n" "g" or "ac" but the whole model will work find (ie: linksys ea4500))?

What kind of internet speeds do you pay for? How many devices are on your network at any given time, and what are people doing on them (are 6 people streaming video?)?

Lastly, what other devices are near the Roku and what kind of wireless signal do they get?
