Are there any Petroleum Engineers with 7+ years experience on here? Advice??

I am looking for a little advice on the stability of jobs in the future and which career path to take.
I am currently with one of the three major service companys but I am wanting to get back to the operator side and work with a smaller, midsized operator. I currently work the GoM but I am wanting to get back on shore and get some experience with an operator in some of the shale plays. This is where my quandary is. As we all know, the oil business is boom or bust just about everyone, but it seems like the GoM isn't quite like the land b/c it takes so long to get projects going and planning. ( I could be totally wrong)
So my question is, do I try to get on with a GoM operator or try to get on with a smaller midsized operator?
My career goals are to work for a small operator where I have a lot of control and not just a completion or drilling engineer but I can do it all.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would stay in the GOM, land is going to come to an end in the next 3-5 years imo. Thats if prices dont drop before then.
What are you doing right now if you dont mind me asking. I am trying to get on with big red in either production enhancement or with sperry. Or get on to Chevron DSM program.
FYI I dont fit your criteria.

Big red production enhancement
Best PSL in the best region IMO.

quote:The Chevron DSM program would probably be a good place to start. I worked rig crew for the first 5 years of my career before actually doing any drilling engineering. Had it not been for some extenuating circumstances I would have gone the DSM path. That's been on hold for the last 5 and probably 5 more.
Advice??
Deepwater will continue to be a steady place. Start talking to the DSMs about it on the rigs you work. When the company drilling superintendents and drilling managers make rig visits don't be shy about talking to them. Most are very cool and looking at attrition replacement anyway.

I should have said to say slow down. At current rates the bigger plays are to be fully drilled in the next 5 years or so if I remember correctly, Bakken and EF. This along with the production coming on line from the shales dropping the price coupled with the continued suppressed NG prices will cause drilling to slow.
I could be way off on the years left of drilling, its been awhile since I have looked over any of that stuff so if so then just negate my post.

Go production enhancement if you can. Its a pretty shitty lifestyle for 3 years or so, but after that your ticket is punched. I've got completion experience, but I lack the reservoir knowledge that is gained in the pumping side.
And I'm not knowledgeable enough to say the gulf is 100% going to outpace other areas, but I know the next 5 years are slammed with work and it looks like the eastern gulf will start opening up soon. I think I can make a 30 year career out of it. Going to get that MBA and management experience just in case though.

You'll definitely have a lot more control with a smaller operator. With previous operator experience, it sounds like you should be able to hire on with one of the smaller guys doing production and eventually dip into other areas with them.

I have been keeping an eye on that and it is intriguing however with ow much influence the cartels have a the moment I can see it being a shite show. That being said if I recall their goal in 50+B in investments by 2018.
KG6 would you mind if I shot you an email, I remember you briefly touching on what you do awhile back in another thread and I have a couple questions if you wouldnt mind.

I disagree, KG. It's definitely not a shitty lifestyle if you are in the GoM.

Living on a boat for more than half the month is not my idea of a great lifestyle lifestyle. It's a great job to learn a lot about the well but if you're married have children or pretty much anything but single then I think it's kind of difficult
