Has anyone been tracking either of these luxury retail stocks? I bought KORS last week, and I am considering adding to my position as well as considering buying (KATE). Any thoughts or opinions on these two companies?

Both took a big hit after what I thought were good earnings reports.

Neither are luxury brands IMO.

Tiffany's, or something along those lines would be more in the luxury sector. Just my opinion. The two you listed are fairly easily accessible to any middle class person.

i have read a few stories about Kors being very saturated in the market. he needs a new twist. And remember trends can move quickly.

i have no opinion on it being a good buy... just think this is a risky segment more than most

I said this in another thread, I would never hold a women's designer company for an extended period of time. Women are too fickle, the flavor of the month could dry up in a heartbeat.

If you want to see the long term outlook of MK, look at Coach. These are the rare instances when having a gf is useful

I bought KATE the day it tanked and sold it the next day. Would I buy it again now.... doubtful (for the reasons listed in this thread).

I don't know anything about the holdings of these companies, but I can tell you they won't last like someone has previously said. Women change their mind fast. It used to be coach, then micheal kors. Its going to be something else soon. They don't want what everyone already has. You need a crystal ball to figure out what the next fad will be, and then you can profit. Otherwise its all the same crap. And I'm never making financial decisions based on women's fashion choices. Have you seen how many times they change their mind when getting ready

Which is why I wouldn't call it a luxury brand. If it's commoditized, it's not luxury. I remember I similar thread a while back about coach. Same thing, they have a coach outlet even. I realized this has nothing to do with the fundementals.

The KORS brand seems stale to me. That's just general social commentary/ gut instinct -- I don't follow the stock.

You can't have your cake and eat it too. MK tried, and he tanked the value of his brand. Coach did the same. I believe retail show be high end or low end, everything in the middle is dangerous.

These brands don't understand that their bread and butter is that they are expensive (mildly), and that they are popular because the girl with money has it. Once it gets to a point that you start marketing to a more middle class base (outlets and department stores), then the people with money will find something else to buy that middle class people cant afford and boom you're done (tommy hilfiger, coach, etc.) . Don't sellout to the quick buck if you want a long lasting name brand.

KORS and KATE are not luxury brands, they are ASPIRATIONAL brands.

I have not bought KORS in over a year. When I found out that our Cadillac health plan was being changed to a high deductible, I pulled back on consumer spending. We are fully funding our HSA this year and if we don't need it, we don't buy it.

The aspirational shoppers are being hit by low wage growth and higher costs in healthcare, food etc.

KORS is very close to ruining the brand with saturation, so when I buy again, it won't be KORS. KATE is just not my style.

agreed. i wouldn't touch any stocks like this with monopoly money. off the top of my head, the only clothing brand id consider would be nike.
