What's the longest you've been unemployed and how did you handle it?

I'm currently starting month 5 of unemployment. I've applied for a shite ton of jobs and interviewed for a few but haven't gotten any offers. Haven't had an interview since May. I'll be honest it's starting to wear on me. I'm moody, gained weight, don't sleep much and my confidence in applying for jobs has waivered.
So, I guess this isn't for the OT ballers pulling a 100k a week, but for those who have been unemployed, how long did it take you to find a job, and any advice on getting through the low points and actually finding work?

What was your previous employment?

6 months out of college. Although I had two offers in April, I didn't start until June.
It took two months to get a legit interview, and the process was very slow moving.
My confidence was shaken as well up until the two offers of course. Keep your head up, keep applying. Eventually you'll be successful.

One intentional month between jobs, it was wonderful, but a distant memory.

I was a post doc researcher with the USDA, the funding for the position ran out.

right out of grad school I was unemployed for 4 months. I ended up taking a professional test (CFA lvl 2) just to keep me sane. Then when people asked what I was up to I had something better than being unemployed to say.

Best 8 weeks of my life. Got into shape, spent time with my kids and parents, and finally finished a bunch of long ago started projects.

I like to take a couple months off every now and then to recharge the batteries

While I've never been unemployed the advice I've offered others when doing their searches boils down to two things:
1. Treat your job search like a job. Don't sleep in, get dressed and spend your day reviewing opportunities, networking over coffee/lunch, and attending organizational meetings/events within your profession.
2. When you aren't doing #1, or need to fill time. Pick up a part time job related to a hobby of yours or volunteer. It'll keep you from sitting at home watching TV and also lessen your expenses related to your hobby.

It took my wife 5 months to find a job after she graduated from college.... the whole process was very frustrating. I completely understand how depressing the process is... Luckily she had a little part time job to help cover our monthly expenses but it took her over 100 applications to get 4 interviews and 2 job offers. She kept an excel spread sheet of all of the jobs that she applied to... I want to say it was about 110 job applications total.

It can be extremely frustrating. Even if you know when the next job will be. The waiting and lethargic feeling sucks. Keep pushing and don't be above taking some waiting job or something to keep you busy or pay the bills.
Use spare time to learn another language, work out, etc.

How are you gaining weight? You aren't working. At least you can make a priority of getting healthy.
Get out of your self-pity. Things will be fine. One day at a time man.

Is that how we refer to rehab now? I just say sabbatical.

12 months (was pseudo working for myself for 9 of it) with 2-3 weeks traveling and then 2-3 weeks at home with nothing to do except a few hrs of paperwork.
Set a schedule and keep it. Get up like you are going to work and find something to do. Go for a walk, mow the lawn, visit grandparents, etc do something.
Exercise everyday for an hour- it doesn't matter what you do just do some type of exercise.
When I finally got an offer it still took like 3 months for them to finish the paperwork to get me onboard.
