115 Yamaha Four Stroke Help

I have a 2009 Yamaha 115 four stroke. When I idle in forward or reverse the motor makes the grinding/clunking noise that a lot of outboards make when going into gear. Mine keeps making the noise once in gear. Bring rpm up a 100 or so and it quits. Any ideas on how to fix? TIA

It sounds like the shift cable needs to be adjusted or replaced. Do it sooner than later.

The fact that it does it in forward and reverse makes me think it may need to be replaced. The adjustment should affect the center of travel (aim for dead center neutral), not length of travel of the shifter/throttle.
Also, you may want to check the oil in the lower unit.

also you may want to check the prop. You could have hit something and thrown it out of balance causing grinding in the lower unit

Its either cable stretched
cable adjustment
or shift forks bent
unlikely but could be bearing in lower. drain fluid see if gray colored or clean. if grey color or metal shavings it needs to be rebuilt

Thanks for all the replies. I am thinking about taking to a dealer for fix and general check up. Who should I go to and what kind of $$$$$ can I expect for check-up and cable replacement? Thanks again.
