for under $1k? It will be used on highway only and I want the smoothest ride possible.

Why full suspension for highway use? I would think a hard tail with a good suspension fork would work fine with good tires properly inflated. You could get that for your price range

Then you shouldn't want a full suspension road bike.
It's like looking for the truck with the most towing capacity that will only be used to transport the kids to soccer practice.

I have a GT Karakoram, but it's not full suspension. It's a great bike, for the money, and has a pretty smooth ride.

1. It's going to be slow as hell on the road.
2. No good full suspension mtn bike is under 1k.
If you are dead set on it, I would suggest trying to find one on craigslist.

Look for an older Santa Cruz Superlight might be able to hit the jack pot with what you are looking to do

If your only riding on road, Full suspension MTB is not the best tool for the job. They are heavy, w/ big slow tires, the suspension movement, creates loss of power transfer to the road.
A road bike with large tires 25-28mm will give a very smooth ride.
As previously mentioned Full Suspension MTBs are very expensive and $1000 will not get you much. Even though modern Full Suspension bike are pretty amazing and do a phenominal job at what they designed for rocky, rooty, hilly off road trails.

Why do you want full suspension if you are only riding it on paved roads???

Might as well get a huffy and save yourself some dollars.
But if you really want to get a nicer bike, that will only be used on the roads(but dont want a road bike), get a city cross style bike, if you need a "smooth" ride, just get a better seat with a shock style post

Look into a mountain bike with 29inch wheels. Diamondback Overdrive, Norco Charger, Scott Aspect. Just read the reviews and take your pick. Those choices are under $1k, you can get much better bikes, but they will cost more of course. Upgrades - Look for Anti-Snake bite tires and heavy duty tubes for all the pot holes. Schwalbe makes some of their tires in "snakeskin" reinforced sidewalls to reduce the rim pinching. Schwalbe Fat Alberts in snakeskin are great for the trails, but maybe you could fine a racing ralph of fast fred with snakeskin for street use. You don't need full suspension for the street, get you a little bouncy seat if you really want to...

I've bought a few bikes from bikes direct.....highly recommended unless you're status conscious and want the brand name
you can get a bike for about 1/2 the name brand price...everything will be the same except the frame, which is made in the same factories that make them for the big brands
ETA: but as everyone says, you're wasting money and weight getting full suspension if you're going to be on the road

I have a specialized 29er, with lockout front suspension. as per the others you don't need full suspension if you are on the road, I do a little of both trail and road and I have the front suspension locked out so basically its a hard tail.

29ers are only useful if you do alot of single track. The whole point is bigger wheels can roll over bigger obstacles.
Full suspension is dumb on a street bike.
Bikesdirect is legit as long as you are familiar with basic tools and own an Allen wrench set.

craigslist
you can find a ton of bikes barely ridden for cheap sold by people who think they need something a lot fancier than they would ever use.

get a bike with front suspension and get a seat post with a shock absorber on it.
