the guy is 300+ pounds, can't fly worth a shite, and dies first when he refuses to pull up.

were the standards for flight school in the rebellion low or were they desperate to find any available body to put in a fighter? there's no way in hell Porkins makes it through flight school and fighter training in any military branch today.

it just seems like he was there because it was all hands on deck

You can say the same about Luke. Hell has Luke ever flown in space before?

Like the guy above said......they took on a guy who had never flown a space craft EVER and sent him off just because he played around in an atmospheric craft and knew a current pilot.

Oh, and he joined the rebellion about 2 hours before the attack.

What about the "loosen up" guy? He looked like my dad trying to hook up the VCR.

Considering it's not a comedy I can't believe the film went as far as naming a fat character Porkins.

Maybe that was his call sign.

Not in the expanded universe which is now meaningless though, his name was Jek Tono Porkins, they nicknamed him piggy and belly runner according to the wiki. Apparently his skill was in low altitude strafe runs, maybe that is why he was cocky about making it when he couldn't...

It's kind of like how they gave a cropduster pilot the cockpit of a fighter jet in Independence Day.

Or maybe he was too big to fly higher and do anything else?

true, luke had never been off his home planet and joined the rebellion a few hours prior, but ends up as the only survivor of the attack and the one who blows up the Death Star.

maybe because he was the best at following orders and those orders were to "stay on target"

even through the threat of death he never wavered (probably bc he was too fat to move, amirite?) but seriously that guy is a true hero to the rebellion.

Luke, turned off his targeting computer which was clearly against protocol. for what? some hail mary based on the old ewan magregor's hunch??

if a hail mary works, you don't praise the coach for superior gameplanning.

Luke got lucky.

Porkins forever!!! RIP
Never forget!!!

George Lucas is still 13 years old, intellectually. We just thought that was awesome in the 70s, brah.

Yeah, there has to be a serious back story to this.
