Saints prepared if Erik Lorig injury lingers

Saw this coming, but looks like Lorig may be headed for IR(not directly said in the article, just my opinion). Don't see how you can hold a spot on the 53 for an injured part time player.

Out for weeks and we signed a 10 year vet instead of another young guy. The question now is has Johnson shown enough or is the solid vet going to be the guy?

Most probably not.

Looks like Loomis will be making some phone calls soon.

Nah it will be Johnson or Jones. That's the whole reason we brought in the vet. He has some pretty solid overall stats for a FB too.

And they've been playing the hell out of Johnson in the preseason, letting him do a bit of everything.

Really hate having to waste another roster spot on a FB. We use them so infrequently and will have 2 roster spots taken up.

That's why I don't see that happening. Maybe he goes on IR- Designated to Return or maybe he comes back just before week 1. Either way I don't see us carrying 2 FBs(one being injured) when Hill can also fill in in a pinch.

Keeping two FBs would definitely not be ideal. Crazy to think in 2011 we kept 2 FBs and two Ks.

Jones would be cut if Lorig cant go, imo. He's just a practice body. They're pretty high on Johnson

That's how I feel about it. He's younger with more upside.

The flip side to that argument is that Johnson can be put on the PS with little chance someone claims him. That way we have Jones and can call up Johnson at any point if he isn't cutting it.

On the year we kept 2 FBs and 2 Ks, we had less deep talent that year and didn't we also only keep 2 TEs instead of 3?

Edit:
Actually in 2011 we IRed Hartley about a month in and only had Kasay after. I think it was 2010 we carried Hartley and Carney for a good bit.

And we did only start with 2 TEs.

LINK

Looking at a lot of those backups we were really lacking quality depth in a lot of spots.

I was under the impression from article he would probably be back, just not by week 1.

Right, so the question becomes can you afford to carry an injured FB for 2-3(or more) weeks with possibly our deepest overall roster? I don't think so.

If he isn't ready for week 1 I think he goes on IR, with the possibility of being designated to return(depending on other injuries like Butler for instance).

Hopefully just keep whichever of the fullbacks is better till Lorig gets back and then cut the other guy. No, like you said, we can't afford to keep 2 FBs. Even though I was a fullback and it's the most awesome position on the field.

I'm up for whichever FB that can be a better lead blocker.

If he can be that AND a receiver, that'd be ideal of course. But give me a Vonta Leach type blocker and we're set.

Both of them seem to be capable receivers. I think Johnson is the better runner, especially now given Jones' age. Last year Johnson's weakness was run blocking but he definitely seems to have improved. Not sure who has the edge there(and I haven't noticed either in pass blocking).

Johnson is the FB.
Jones is there as a just in case and depth for camp.

And as best I can tell Lorig is somewhere around the grassy knoll.

How long is he expected out? Why not just used Josh Hill as a blocking back for a week?*

*I heard on the radio yesterday he's (Lorig) out for just Week 1.

That's incorrect. At this point with what Payton said I don't think they know how long he'll be out.

The radio guys probably heard Payton say week 1 and took that as only week 1. The way it was said sounds indeterminate.
