Are there any newer bands or singer-songwriters I should check out that write decent lyrics?

John Fullbright gets my vote. He is an incredible lyricist and my personal favorite singer/songwriter. And he can play the shite out of a keyboard.

I'll throw one of my favorites into this thread as well:

Gregory Alan Isakov. To me, he's a modern Townes Van Zandt.
