need a good printer that I will just be using at home to print out handouts and homework stuff for school. It would be nice if it had a scanner as well unless printer/scanner combos tend to be cheap. scanner not a necessity but would be convenient

mainly just want something that will print reasonably fast and wont kill me on ink cartridge refills

Be careful here..I had a printer/scanner run out of ink, and it would not even scan until I had replaced the ink...

frick the printer industry

don't get me started on the ink scam. i could go for DAYS. you think my iOS rants are bad

this is a tough subject because 160,000 new printers show up on the market every month and because they are always on sale or clearance its hard to say which to buy at any given time.

honestly they're a commodity. just find a good deal on a decently speced printer. they're all about the same except some are ink and some are laser.

i guess you're opting for ink jet? prepare thy anus for the ink penis.

I bought an okidata laserjet in the military in 1994 used it until 4 years ago and only changed the toner once. Can't find stuff like that anymore.

friend of mine was just telling me how her mom will just go out and buy a new printer every time she runs out of ink instead of buying new ink!

Seriously though...the whole you have to replace color ink to print black and white pisses me off sooo much.

Also...recently got a printer (christmas present) that has a scanner on it. It literally requires me putting one piece of paper in to the copy/scanner area and pressing the scan button...then pressing a button for scan another page, replacing said single piece of paper on the next one and so forth until the job is over. It's a nightmare compared to just setting 15 pages on to the auto feeder and having it done in seconds like at work...

TL;DR- just buy a cheap arse printer and replace it when the ink goes dry and scan everything at work on a real scanner.

oh they got wise to that years ago. all new printers come with 'starter ink' which look like regular ink carts but like 10% full.

No, let's get started. Because yes, printers are garbage shite-eating a-hole cocksuckers. Consumers have been buying the same the printers for years. The only true advancement has been wifi and ad hoc support. Printing technology has reached its peak, because there is no money in printer technology. It's all in the supplies. That's why most of the R&D money goes into ensuring you get the shittiest of experiences if you dare try to refill your cartridges or use non-genuine cartridges.

I have a Brother laser multifunctional, wifi, even, that I'm happy with. It occasionally acts up and you have to cycle power to reconnect to the router - but other than that, no problems.

I have the HP 5535 and I'm pretty happy with it. It's wireless and has it's own email address so you can print from anywhere.

I also joined the HP instant ink thing. For $10 a month you can print up to 300 pages and when your ink gets low, the printer tells the system you need more ink and HP express ships new cartridges to your door. It's been pretty awesome so far.

Holy. shite.

It's worse than I thought. They've succeeded in finding a way to turn your printer into a subscription service.

if you don't need color, find a cheap laserjet printer and be done with it. 1 toner cartridge will last you a year or so, if you don't print a lot, it'll last a lot longer. you don't have to worry about the ink/toner drying up, or printheads breaking.

i use our office's color laser when i need it. its one of those 5 badillion dollar all-in-one copier juggernaut devices so the printing is top notch.

i've found little need for a printer outside of maybe a dozen times a year my kids need something for school and when that happens, the binding tools we have at the office are really nice so i can whip them up a great looking report.

eta 2 things:

1. this only works if they tell me prior to the day its due so i can print a copy or 2 a few days ahead of time and then can make edits if necessary and run a new copy.

2. this is where google docs is MONEY. i don't get to spend time with my kids in the afternoons since i'm working so its nice to share a document or presentation they're working on and dcoument 'chat' with them and proof it and i can print it before i leave to go home.

i love google i fricking hate google

i print like 10 things a year, the wife prints 10 things a week.

I don't understand it.

I tell her "text or email it to yourself" that way its on your phone.

Anyway, i just got a wifi brother printer. But it won't print when I am connected to VPN which is sorta lame as almost all 10 of those print jobs is work related stuff.

If I need anything printed, I do it at the office. The only thing I've ever really printed was boarding passes. Now that Southwest is with the digital age, I'll print another pass out again.
