Beale Street cover charge, would this work on Bourbon Street

Beale Street cover charge continues despite sales hit
Probably not, Bourbon is way too long and a lot of pedestrians and vehicles use the sides streets that cross.
However, the idea is interesting from a public safety perspective.
Thoughts?

It could work in a red light district if we could have one.

No way. Too many intersections and you have hotels that people need to get in and out of

Could you imagine the cluster frick during events?

Where we are, Agee continued, is that the street has to do something to reduce the number of people who bring their own beer to the street in the early mornings, catcall women and pick fights. The street has also seen a couple of stampedes recently along with violent incidents, including a widely circulated video of a bloody man passed out on the street.
The street isn't normally a rough place, he adds, but it can get "salty" between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. That's why the merchants, even if their sales suffer, are willing to pay the price, Agee said.
I like this. Whenever you're out on beale you can tell when its time to go home or to Raifords. It just looks dangerous (ETA: ie. there are a ton of people on Beale). A cover charge will keep people who don't plan on spending any money off the street.

I agree it wouldn't work on Bourbon, but the idea is interesting. I wonder what the result would be if someone anonymously polled all of the Bourbon Street businesses.

Beale has really only two or three cross streets while Bourbon has a ton. Beale would be much easier logistically.

Well I guess as an idea they would like it. They would probably like the idea of a force field of some kind to keep thugs out as well.

This got discussed up in Shreveport a few years back when they threw a ton of money into the open area downtown by the Texas Street bridge. It was a cool place with several bars, restaurants and a band stand. And then it took a turn for the worse when a certain demographic rolled in (NOT a particular race) but rather people their own intoxicants, not patronizing the businesses and starting trouble.
They were going to do a cover charge right up until someone, somewhere declared it "racist" and that plan died with a quickness. The area went under and is mostly vacant last time I was up there.

This. What a ridiculous question.

They should keep it free but they should ID everyone that enters, just like s bar does. They could also check for warrants while doing this so it would keep out criminals, keep out the young thugs and if anything happens they would have a list of all of the people there.

Which one of the 30 intersections and hotel exist would you want to set up that checkpoint at?

You want them checking IDs at 15 intersections? Speaking of things that will never work.

Will the workers be dressed like gestapo as well?

And lets not forget that small issues of vehicles needing to get across these intersections

When did this start? I went to Beale for the first time this weekend, and I just assumed this was the norm, is it new?
FWIW, while I was expressing my confusion over it, a cop pulled me aside and we had a pretty productive discussion on it. I understood the need for it (some sketchy characters, about 10 of them, turned away while we were there when told of the fee), but it seemed like an easy path to corruption and misuse. Too much like "paying" for protection.
