AG sues State Farm over auto parts scheme

BATON ROUGE - Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell announced Tuesday that his office filed suit against State Farm Insurance, claiming the company had a deal with auto repair shops to put inferior, cheaper parts in cars they covered.

Caldwell accused State Farm of deceiving its policy holders by getting them to use body shops the insurance company had contracts with. He said those shops then used cheaper, less crash-worthy parts to fix the vehicles, rather than parts from the vehicle's manufacturer, which saved State Farm money.

The suit cited one crash where Caldwell said an aftermarket hood was installed on a vehicle. After another wreck that hood crumpled into the windshield and did not activate the airbag as intended, according to Caldwell.

The attorney general also said State Farm wasn't the only insurance company in Louisiana with such deals. He said the suit, which accused State Farm of violating Louisiana's Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law, seeks to change the industry's practices. He also called for State Farm to pay restitution for its conduct.

This is pretty big news. If you have had a state farm claim within the past few years, look over your paperwork. If aftermarket parts were used, get in touch with the AG's office. They want to hear from you.

Caldwell says many of the adjusters were estimating 24-29% lower than what it would cost to fix damaged vehicles.

As are the re-insurance companies who insure the policies for the insurance companies.

Insurance is the 2nd largest fraud ever perpetrated on the human race.

Banking is first.

I had the opposite experience. I was able to choose to send mine to the dealership. There was only one questionable part on the list, but I approved it after a little bit of research.

All I can say is that the Atty General is correct on this suit. I spoke to one of their investigators myself. My wife's 3 month old SUV was hit by an underinsured driver. Had to fight State Farm at every turn to get new parts put on the vehicle. They originally only wanted to rebuild the axle at an out of state repair shop which would have taken months. They said a 3 month old vehicle did not warrant new parts.

Estimates always came in low.
