Has any OTer been accused by a rental car company of not returning a rental?

If so, how did that turn out? Easy fix, or convoluted process?

Could you evolve just a bit in this thread and reword the op so it fails to always be confusing?

Yes. Forgot to leave the keys in the car and didn't realize until on the bus to the terminal. Dropped them in the provided "key drop" on the bus and assumed all was well. Rental car company called two days later to ask where the vehicle was. Was annoying, but we were able to resolve the issue over the next week or so. Only a minor PITA

My client reserved a van, and then switched his reservation to a larger vehicle. 2 weeks later Hertz calls and tells him he owes $1500 for rental and damages to original van. He has been going back and forth with them. He had to get a notarized letter stating he didnt rent the original.
