By next week, NFL is expected to increase size of practice squads to 10 players from 8, per source. So 64 more jobs.

They need to increase game day actives too while they're at it.

What makes one not eligible for practice squad?

Off the top of my head, I think after your 4th year in the league.

service time basically. I think you get 2 "practice squad" seasons then you arent eligible.

if you play in more than 8 games on the active roster, you're no eligible.

I was wrong:

Practice squads are considered to be for developmental purposes. Therefore, veterans are not eligible to be signed to the practice squad. In fact, players with more than one year of accrued NFL service are not eligible. Here is a closer look at the eligibility requirements.

A player is eligible if he does not have an accrued season of NFL experience. Players gain an accrued season by being on the active roster for at least six games.
If a player has one accrued season, they can still be practice squad eligible if they were on the 45-man active gameday roster for less than nine regular season games.
A player is deemed to have served a season on the practice squad if he remains on the practice squad for at least three weeks. Players are eligible to be on the practice squad for two seasons.
Players can be eligible for a third practice squad season if their team maintains no less than 53 players on the active/inactive list at all times.

Having 10 would definitely help me with guessing the final roster.Plus we get to keep two more pretty good young guys.

Before I was unsure if we could keep Nic Jacobs for instance. Now he easily fits.

It's either him or Hamm, but Hamm hasn't practiced in a while. I'm projecting him to go on the IR.

Hamm would be a bit too much like Hill, imo. Jacobs might not be flashy but his size and strength makes him ideal to take over as the blocking TE in a year or two when Watson takes a walk.

Sure, but he's someone I'd like to see developed.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Perfect timing for us since we are loaded with talent and this could prevent a really nice player been picked up off waivers.

Is this a result of football being deeper with talent now than say 5 years ago? I'm not saying there is enough to add 2 teams, but is it just deeper overall than not long ago?

It's more due to the lack of a developmental system. Without a minor league, NFL Europe, or a lesser major league guys have to develop in Canada or the Arena league, both whose rules are different from the NFL.

Instead of 45 active with 8 inactive, have maybe 48 or 50 active.

I don't see it happening though as the whole point of that rule is to level the playing field between healthy and ailing teams.

Say one team has two guys legitimately hurt and another has ten hurt. With the rule as is the healthier team only has a two man advantage. If you made it 50 now they have a seven man advantage.
