Which wood is ideal for making a Bow Drill in South Georgia?

My son is in scouts and he will have to know several different methods of primitive fire starting. We have looked it up online and gone out looking for different types of trees. The online sites we've found list trees that are not in this area or they are not plentiful.
I read that sappy trees are not good for this method. They make it more difficult.
