Going to las vegas end of September and will be planning a day trip to the Grand Canyon. I've been looking at packages and tours, would really like to go on a hike or white water rafting or a helicopter tour. There just so many options.

What was your favorite experience at the grand canyon?

You're talking about a 4 hour drive each way. Youn won't have much time to do anything except admire the view and maybe see some exhibits in the visitor center.

If it was me, I'd skip Vegas and go to the Grand Canyon. Although even if you do that, rafting is booked up months if not years in advance.

ETA: Rafting there is not like other places. It's a multi-day, high adventure, bucket list type activity.

I think you would enjoy taking two hookers via helicopter and hiking for a while in the nude, flipping a raft over, oiling them down, having some fun, and flying back to Vegas by a helicopter.

Anyone suggested that option yet?

You can probably do some short hikes, but most of the cool stuff is down in the canyon and takes some work to get there. All national parks are better if you can get off the beaten path and away from the tourists, Grand Canyon especially so.

I'm not trying to deter you, just don't be disappointed if there's not a whole lot to do except stand at the overlook and admire the view. Hopefully it will inspire you to go back later and really experience the park

Exactly, I'd love to rent a car and go out there to do our own thing. But I kind of want to drink a little bit while I admire one of the world's wonders! I'll defiantly go back and do it better, I'm just going for my first time and have no idea what to expect. Would defiantly prefer to go down in the canyon and hike.

Get with your hotel Concierge. They can hook you up with a tour.

In 2008 I did a day tour of the Canyon from Vegas. I took a bus (sent by the tour company) from the hotel to a small airport. Took a puddle jumper plane to the Grand Canyon. Got on a bus to a lookout point/had lunch. Got on a helicopter to the bottom. Then got on a boat with about 8-10 people and went up the Colorado River a couple miles and drifted back. Then reversed the process.

It took about 8 hours and cost $400 dollars.

It was fricking amazing.

If you've never been, that's probably enough.

i'll be out there also at the end of September (21-27). Except I'll be running the Grand to Grand Ultra, which starts at the North Rim, and ends at the Grand Staircase. If you end up making it out there during those days, bring me a beer!!

before bowing, let's see if I finish first...it's seven days, 170 miles, self supported. only thing they provide is a tent, and water, so I have to carry all my other gear/food.

this will be my first ultra marathon, and some running websites rank it in the top 10 hardest ones to do.

And something that I've heard you have to plan months to nearly a year in advance.

ETA.....Sorry, just read the part in your post where you said that

Seeing it for the first time is pretty awe inspiring in itself. However, the true majesty of the Grand Canyon takes many days to enjoy. The way light changes the canyon from dawn to dusk is truly amazing.

I flew to Vegas and drove to the south rim and the Zion and then a few days in Vegas to wind down.

I hope to hit more of southern Utah and the North Rim via Las Vegas one day soon.

The North Rim is a whole different experience. It's nearly a thousand feet higher than the South Rim, and is an alpine plateau instead of desert. I was snowed on in August on the North Rim. It's also harder to get to, with fewer amenties, so a lot less crowded.

Cheapest opition is to rent a car. you can leave and return on your own time. I did it from the Hertz at the Airport.
