Most of the late model vehicles now have what is called a 'PATS' key system or something similar. LINK

Meaning it has a computer chip in it that must be programmed in sync with the vehicle. Its an anti-theft device which has left many a people stranded out when they lose their keys.

The dealerships are now being required by the manufactures to have proper photo IDs, some sort of documentation with the VIN on showing ownership of the vehicle to the person requesting a key.

Its turned into a HUGE hassel for both the vehicle owner and the dealership.

Best thing to do is to have SEVERAL spare keys made... which 80% of folks will not do until they are stuck out somewhere.

People are downright stupid idiots.
