Federal Fusion vs Core-Lokt
Posted by 4LSU2 on 8/15/14 at 9:30 pm00
Anyone have experience with Federal Fusions? I'm looking at which bullet to shoot out of my new 270 winchester.
I currently own another 270 and a couple of alt 6's and have had great success with the Core-Lokt's. The on-line reviews I've seen lately says the Fusion outperforms the Core Lokt. The guy at the gun shop recommends a Federal Nosler Partition round, which is not readily available and is 2 1/2 times the cost of either of the aforementioned rounds.
I'm just curious as to why I would stray from my faithful Core-Lokt.

switched to rem psp 150 about 15 years ago, never thought I'd change from cl 180, but have been very happy I did. got a tad more flatness out of 7 mag at longer distances.

Federal blue box 150gr round nose .270 win is the best whitetail deer load ever devised by mankind.
I shoot the 130's because they are much easier to find when I need them. Also a fantastic performer.
I've had bad experiences with corelocks but never with the cheap federal blue box.
Cheap, shoot well, exit every time, frick deer up. Not sure why anybody wouldn't shoot them.

I loved them but I started reloading. They did great on deer. I killed a 160-170lb 8pt at 250yds. The bullet went through both shoulders and lodged under the skin on the other side. It's looked like a starfish with curly legs. The buck went 5 yds.
I killed several more deer with including my biggest buck at 300yds. He ran maybe 60yds but bled like a murder scene.
They don't blow up but they do expand leaving a good exit hole when shot through the ribs.
They also grouped very good in my .270 and .300win.

That's where I am with the Core Lokt's, tbh. You could buy a box of 270 or 30-06 Core-Lokt at damn near every convenient store in NELA when I was growing up, plus they perform well. That's one of the main reasons I chose a 270 when getting this gun. I've got an A-Bolt 270 that was given to my grandfather from his company as a retirement gift 20 years ago that hasn't been used. I'm planning to give it to my son when he's able to shoot it and thought it would be cool for him to shoot the same caliber as his dad when he's 15 or so, plus the ammo availability.
My son uses Core-Lokts in his .308 and I use them in my .270 - the Core-Lolts drops them everytime. My primary rifle is a 7mm WSM and I use Federal Premiums in it (1/2" grouping @ 100yrds) - tried the Federal Fusions in it and the accuracy we horrible (3" to 4" groupings @ 100yrds). But, every gun has its own characteristics; some guns will shoot all brands accurately, while others will only shoot specific brands accurately. If they both shoot well in your rifle, try both on deer this year and see what results you get - if there's not much difference, go with the cheaper ones.

That's actually a really good idea. One of my friends did the same thing when his his grandsons were young and hunted in the same stand w/ him. He figured that way he didn't have to worry about loading the wrong ammo and would have sufficient ammo for both guns.
quote:I know you've heard of the phrase, "If it ain't broke......" From your experience w/ Core Lokt's , it sounds as if it's going to be impossible for a new bullet to be an improvement over the CL. OTOH, just wanting to try something different is always a sufficient reason to change bullets. The Partition is a fine bullet, but it's really not necessary to use a controlled expansion bullet on the size of whitetail deer we have around here.

Well don't change ya jackass.
If it ain't broke.....
If it ain't broke.....
I killed one deer with my 270 and it was with fusions.
Bullet went in the front shoulder and destroyed it.
Threw that shoulder away with no meat to salvage.
Bullet exited, but somehow I did not get a blood trail.
I know it doesn't make any sense, but that's what happened.
Deer ran about 60 yards and I found him blindly.

Don't mean to hijack this post but.... I have been thinking of trying Fusions for my Marlin 30-30. It's an older gun and shot core-lokt fine until I had to put a new barrel on it. Now it doesn't like the lokt at 100 yds. I tried some Hornady and they did very well. Any body have any experience with the Fusions and 30-30??
