My brother in law recently had his identity stolen. As our assets increase over time, I think it's time to employ an identity protection service.

Which one do you all use?

And if it's Lifelock, which of the 3 levels do you use?

Scam that I'm not paranoid enough to fall for.

I use Equifax. They charge $19.95 a month and you can cancel at anytime. You can set your settings to "lock". You can set when applying for credit in your name to "lock" and it won't let anyone apply for credit. It notifies you by email if someone tries to apply for credit with your name.

$19.95 per month off your paranoia???? It's amazing what people will shell money out for these days. Simply amazing.

I guess it's worth it then. Maybe I'd feel different if I had my identity stolen.

I've had a couple situations happen this year, and wondering if Lifelock etc would've helped.

1. Someone filed a false return with my SSN etc for 2013 Federal Income taxes. (I assume with a big fat return to be sent to a bank account?) The IRS caught it, sent me a letter telling me their auditing my return (that I had yet to file.)

2. Also had someone try to pay their Geico premium using one of my credit cards, in Washington DC.

Hard to imagine Lifelock is able to monitor Fed tax returns.

The cc company caught the Geico thing before it happened... cancelled that card.

Lifelock reviews on Amazon saying the service has little value, and can be almost impossible to cancel.

Wired article says "The FTC called the claims bogus and accused LifeLock of operating a scam..."

I'm signed up for something similar that is about $30/month. I've never used it and should probably cancel it

Reading some reviews and it appears Identity Force is the best.
