That's what I'm doing. I now remember I ditched the hand cannon. I finished the strikes sunday so I had to wait until today to see xur. The crucible kills aren't bad though. I got about 1/3 of them in 2 salvage matches.

I somehow got the 25 kills in the crucible in two salavage matches earlier and I'm pretty mediocre in pvp. Just make sure you know where the heavy falls and have a machine gun. If you're careful you can get 4 or so kills per heavy drop.
