salary negotiation help

I searched and couldn't find much.
I recently found a job I am very interested in, with a salary structure that is part commission with a base salary included. The job would require a move and I want to make sure I set my family up as well as possible.
The commission portion is set, but I come asking for advice on negotiating the base salary. I am slightly over qualified, and a direct quote from employer is "I am willing to negotiate salary to keep you."
No real numbers have been thrown around. But I have a number in my head that is around 10k more than the last guy made.
I know the best move is to get him to fire first, but do I counter with 5-10 over what I want and come down? Do I level with him and just say what I expect and what it will take to keep me?

if you have a firm cutoff at 10k, theres no reason to dance around that.
that said, a better idea of the position would help. what percentage of salary the 10k is, and how in demand your skills truly are may help get feedback on if its reasonable

Yup. Tell him you have discussed with your family and X is the base salary you need for the position.
Dont play games.

The 10k number is my estimation of how much MORE than the last guy I'll need. I would suspect the base salary represents around 50-65% of my total income. Give or take.
Frankly this isn't exactly a desirable job. He could find someone with my skills very easily. But he can't find people with my skills willing to deal with violent coonasses in the way the position requires.
