In what The Wall Street Journal calls the "lowest point" in Israel-U.S. ties, White House reportedly puts military assistance to Israel under close scrutiny after learning that Israeli requests for munitions were approved in military-to-military channels.

As further proof of the deteriorating relations between Israel and the U.S., the White House has instructed the Pentagon to hold a shipment of Hellfire missiles meant for the Israel Air Force, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, calling this the "lowest point" in Israel-U.S. relations since U.S. President Barack Obama took office.

Signaling to Israel that U.S. military assistance is now under drastically closer scrutiny than in the past, White House and State Department approval is now required for every request made by Israel, the report said.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the decision was spurred by the recent discovery that the Israel Defense Forces had secured American munitions transfers without the express approval of the White House, by way of military channels.

The report cites a July 20 request for mortar shells and illuminating rounds, stored at a pre-positioned weapons stockpile in Israel. The request was approved by military channels within three days, and according to U.S. officials "no presidential approval or signoff by the secretary of state was required or sought." The deal was not made public.

The turning point came when on July 30, the U.S. was accused of supplying shells to Israel following the shelling of a U.N. school in Jabaliya. The administration was reportedly taken off guard, placing further strain on an already tense relationship with Israel's leadership.

"There was no intent to blindside anyone. The process for this transfer was followed precisely along the lines that it should have," the report quoted an American defense official as saying. The decision to halt the missile shipment came amid existing tensions surrounding efforts to strike a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Earlier this month, as American pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mounted, the Israeli prime minister reportedly advised the Obama administration "not to ever second guess me again" on the matter, insisting that the U.S. trust him on Hamas' unwillingness to enter into and follow through with cease-fire talks.

Did they read about it in the newspaper?

I do think the President should be aware of these types of deals however.

The process used didn't just occur out of the blue. It was likely implemented by a prior administration. What is new is Obama becoming aware of the process and objecting to it. You could ask why has it taken Obama 6 years to learn of the process? But this is likely the first occasion during his Presidency when the process has been used.

Good. The Commander in Chief should have direct say so in these types of matters. Whether he makes the right call or not is up for scrutiny, but he should make the call regardless.

I wouldn't get too excited. Sounds like a case of plausible deniability to me...Plus, I don't think the checks will stop anytime soon (unfortunately).

You are the average American. Our government has been meddling in shite for the last 75 years and creating most of the foreign policy problems we have.

Hell, here you go.

I don't know exactly how our FMF arrangement with Israel is structured, but it is very possible (probable even) that they receive certain pieces of equipment on a schedule that was already signed off by the DoS at some point in the past. Even if the WH promulgated new policy and restrictions, there were probably loopholes that they could exploit through either the incompetence or complicity of someone(s)in DSCA.

ETA: The event in question occurred in late July. I don't believe the new "line-item" approval process was put into place until the end of the first week in August.

Long-story short, however, the Israeli government has powerful friends throughout our government which has afforded them near-unparallelled access to senior officials in Congress, among appointed officials, and even among career Senior executives.

The average Southern American. Rah-rah USA. We are always the good guys. The moneyed interests behind the dog and pony show we call the American political system call the shots. And their interests don't jive with the interests of the American people.

LMAO, you're an idiot, one of the blame America first crowds. You don't have a clue about the facts, only the propaganda as spewed by left wing nut jobs and the left wing media.

Last 75 years

England and France might all be speaking German if not for the USA and there might be very few Jews left alive.

The Vietnam war was a proxy war between communism and capitalism and freedom. The U.S. won the cold war.

The Muslims are fighting a Jihad against all non muslims, you can bury you head in the sand, but they aren't going away.

You need to start analyzing the facts instead or repeating dumb people's talking points.

Also

South Korea would probably be under North Korean rule without the U.S.

It saddens me we are raising rebel rousers with no capacity for intellectual thought nowadays.
