I have been trying to eliminate some of the meat from my diet and was curious if anyone has tried many meat substitutes. I am not a big fan of tofu are any other soy products. Recently came across a product called quorn which is a myoprotein which is basically a factory grown fungus. I have tried the nuggets and chicken cutlets and it is suprisingly good. I have also tried field roast sausages which are made from grain and they are pretty good as well. I know there are not many vegetarians here but has anyone tried many of the meat substitutes on the market?

My question is why. As you know, from a health perspective there are plenty of meats that are healthy.

It is more of an experiment than anything. I have gradually been eating more vegetarian meals and decided to go vegetarian for a month to see how I feel.

I'm not big on meat substitutes but Beyond Meat beefy crumbles are good. They are soy and wheat free, made with pea protein.

Do they sell these at Whole Foods? I have some of the quorn crumbles but haven't tried them yet.

Some of the meat substitutes are very likely worse for you than the actual meat. Why not just eat vegetables, fruits and grains? No need to pretend to still be a meat eater.

Yes Whole Foods has them. They are in refrigerated section, not frozen like Quorn.

This is true of some of the products but some are pretty healthy. What do you mean by pretend to me a meat eater? Just because someone chooses not to eat meat doesn't mean they no longer like the taste and texture of meat.

Give Tempeh a try. It's not bad if you prepare it right. There are some good recipes online.

Beyond Meat is one of the better options if you need some type of shredded chick'n or chunks. Tempeh is good grilled and used as a meat sub. Makes a really good bacon for a sandwich.

Jackfruit (canned in brine/water not syrup) can be used as a pulled pork type meat replacement in stuff like tacos or whatever.

I've seen seasoned walnuts in dishes like chili for a meaty texture.

We tried this when we were going the vegan thing, and my god, it was pretty bad man. I bet it would be better in tacos, but we tried straight pulled pork sandwiches. I still have nightmares.

Put the jackfruit in the crock pot with some head country bbq sauce. Let it go about 3 hours. I think it was the texture that got to me. Couldn't get past it. I bet it's better with tacos.

Nice. I drained it, pulled it and cooked it down with some onions and bbq sauce. Served on sandwiches (pretty sure I posted a pic on here). Next time I'll just let it cook longer

How would you rate and compare quorn and beyond meat?

My wife is a vegetarian, so we've done just about all the meat subs. Like someone else said, I finally decided that most of them were more processed and weird than just eating meat.

We just do lots of legumes/beans, quinoa, and fresh veggies (and I do a lot of chicken for myself and the kids who are all still carnivores).

The Morningstar Black Bean burgers are pretty awesome, though, I gotta admit. Their meat crumbles, on the other hand, tear our stomachs up. We tried the Qorn, but the texture was kind of weird to us.

I've been a veggie...really a piscetarian for over 20 years. I used to eat the meat subs all the time. But like others have posted, all the meat subs are highly processed, chemical and sodium laden blobs of phoniness. But Some of them taste pretty good. The Quorn chic patties and nuggets are good. And the Morning Star Grillers Patty and sausage patties are good. And there is a Tempeh "Fakin' Bacon" stuff I like. I do avoid mostly avoid the fake meat stuff now that I am educated on the processing and chemicals in them.

Yea but its been a while. I didn't care for any of what I tried. In addition to what I listed previously, I like the Yves brand ham slices for sandwiches and the Smart Deli ham and turkey slices. But both have carrageenan in them which is maybe not so good for you. So I have stopped eating those except for special occasions....like my wife going out of town.
