@GovJayNixon just confirmed that the State Police & Federal Authorities are going to relieve St. Louis County PD of their duties here. 9:33 AM - 14 Aug 2014

Federal authorities? Can they do that?

If the Governor requests it, they can.

Why wouldn't he just have his state police or national guard do it?

My understanding is that this means the National Guard is being deployed.
Or will Nixon be sending in the MO version of the State Troopers instead?

The entire department?

Someone is losing a job over this fiasco

National Guard would be the best bet. With the tensions against the police right now, putting more in front of the protesters wouldn't help things at all IMO.
Maybe Fed is sending someone to command it.

Do your best to secure the city limits, and let these idiots loot and destroy their own city

I'm tempted to agree, but what about the honest inhabitants and business owners that are losing their property to these rioters?

Because putting a Guardsman with an assault rifle in front of them is that much better, right.

No, what needs to happen is the National Guard needs to come in and beat the hell out of the anarchists and give them about 40 years in jail.

Probably not. But the people are pissed at "Police".
Putting another entity there with that in their name isn't a good idea if you can help it. IMO.

Is the NG trained in riot control?

With they way they were used overseas, they may be.
But then, we could have another Kent State on our hands.
THat's why I think the Fed element is someone who can command this situation on the State's end.

The Federal government is no more experienced in this than the NG. Probably less so.
