Small business owners - best bang for your marketing buck

Small business owners of MT, what have you seen the best return on investment when it comes to marketing?
More specifically for a household based service?
I've read about direct mail being very effective, but it's hard for me to believe people actually look at all their junk mail. Anybody have luck with this?
Also, what about Google ad words? I feel as if most people these days simply search online when looking for a specific service. Is this cost effective?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Google Ad Words has worked great for me. I'd also have someone familiar with SEO go over your website. If you can get in those first few results that aren't paid ads you are money.

Trade shows are good. I'm all about meeting people and showing off your product in person.
Also look into joining business specific organizations. They may cost a lot up front but your product/company will be among a reputable group and some organizations offer one-on-one meetings and live presentations during their annual meetings. It will give your product more value than any ad will.
Good luck!

Quality and customer care. Honestly, for a small business that is performing a service that requires going into somebody's home, word of mouth is your most powerful tool. Focus your time and energy on training your guys to be respectful and thorough.

Word of mouth is right. When we were adding another route to our business we had door hangers made and every house we worked we'd hang one on the houses next door. We're already in the area so that's a good spot to get new business and not add a ton of driving.
Building it out slow and being sure to really take care of current customers has produced good results for us.

Least expensive, but most effective ...
Direct mail generates anywhere from a 1 % to 3 % return, depending upon the effectiveness of your ad.

I assume you mean 1-3% response rate correct?

Facebook is cheap, targeted, and effective. Plus, it is very easy to get started.

Radio and having a website has been my biggest bang for the buck. Radio works if you give it time and run multiple ads a day, at very least 2 in a day. People laugh but yellow pages still gets me a lot of biz with the old folks. You can also advertise, although didn't work for me, on Graigslist and may get some hits.

I assume you do windshields by the looks of your name. How are people directed to your website mainly? Are you near the top on search listings for your service?
Posted on 8/14/14 at 8:04 pm to rintintin
Yes, I'm the first, sometimes second unpaid search listing. Usually just typing in windshield replacement or repair with city and I'm at the top. I have website on yellow pages and all my business cards. I don't do Adwords, not sure why I'm ranked high, maybe just time website has been open. I did my keywords myself but not sure if that helped or not. I also posted my website and biz info on all free pages letting you list your business, yelp, mapquest, yahoo local, and google maps, etc

Ditto, along with word of mouth.
Run an ad on WWL or WJBO a few times a month between 9-2pm=PROFIT!

I do this for a living. What do you do? Based in BR?

I also do this for a living and I'm not surprised at how some people think it is a one hit wonder.
SEO is going to give the best returns.
Yelp / customer review sites are clutch as well.
Radio gives you larger coverage area.
TV commercials are not worth it.

And you have to get people engaged to really get out there, I give shite away all they time to people that like, share, and comment on statuses. I had like 30k likes for on sack of crawfish year before last

Your page must have a lot of likes, or did you pay a lot to boost that giveaway?
Posted on 8/17/14 at 9:24 am to Athanatos
No paying to boost is a waste I think. I just have a lot of likes
