If you have a problem with your Onkyo receiver that is out of warranty, don't do like I did and take it to a local repair shop. Call Onkyo first. Or, at least, read their forum and avoid paying the stupid tax like I did.

After the local shop informed me that it was an HDMI board failure, and the huge cost to repair it, I called Onkyo. They then informed me that if I would have contacted them first, they would have performed an "out of warranty" repair. Provided I paid to ship it to their repair center in Houston. But since I had someone other than an authorized repair center work on it, there was nothing they could do but allow me to "trade in" my unit for a discount on a refurbished one.

So, I "traded in" my 4-5 year old TX-NR1007 for a refurbished TX-NR929 for $600. They were listing these units for $1100 on their website. But it cost me about $50 to ship it to CT, as the old unit weighed over 50 pounds. One year warranty. Pretty much the same specs, plus Wifi and Bluetooth. If this one fails, I think I'm going with Marantz.

Good info, I trashed mine for the same problem last year. It's a very common problem, but I think they have corrected it on newer receivers. Mine would only work after it was warmed up so I used to leave the receiver on all the time.

I had a similar situation. I originally bought a TXSR608. About a year into it the HDMI board failed. I sent it in for warranty work. After hanging on to it for a while they informed me that the replacement boards were on back order for a long time, so they sent me the upgraded model the TXNR609 for free. I was a happy camper...until a year later when the HDMI board in it failed....right around the time my original and only valid warranty was up...

I called them to see if the could make an exception and deal with it under warranty, it was only out of warranty by a month or so. They couldn't. To get the work done by them was going to be expensive, so I asked if i could purchase an HDMI board from them and replace it myself. They wouldn't do it. My only options were to send it in a let them fix it for whatever it would cost, or to do their trade in program. Honestly I didn't trust the HDMI board in either option to last very long, so I bit the bullet and bought a Pioneer Elite VSX-43. I've had it for a year and had zero problems.

Honestly, doing your research in what receiver to buy, onkyo always come up to the top of the list as far as features for price. They jam pack all the features of high end receivers into great price points. That's why I bought my onkyo. But the quality was obviously not there.

Onkyo had a run for several years with hdmi issues. Their reputation took such a hit for the issue that they've doubled down on the hdmi feature with their newer units so I wouldn't bat an eye at purchasing a new unit.

Fwiw I had a 606 .. Last unit before the hdmi issue started cropping up.. And just upgraded to a refurb 626 during one of those woot/amazon $289 deals and I have to say this unit is absolutely amazing for the price. Would recommend.

I've had an Onkyo RC-270 that was riddled by HDMI issues, even after being "fixed" by Onkyo. Previously I had an Onkyo TX-DS575 and TX-SR600, so I was an Onkyo fan. Never again after that 270.

Since then have used a Pioneer VSX-1120 and currently have a Yamaha Aventage RX-A820 and haven't had issues with either one.

I don't blame you a bit.. like I said they lost a lot of customers and goodwill over that HDMI issue.

why is this the first I've heard about this problem with Onkyo after posters consistently recommend the brand on this board? I own two denon receivers that I love but just bought an onkyo to run my patio sound a couple of weeks ago. so far so good, but I don't like the sound of this HDMI issue.

Same problem with mine. In 1080i mode it worked fine. In 1080p it would freak out about ten times an hour. I gave up and made it my "outdoor" speaker amp and bought a different brand.

Pretty sure I posted back in the spring about my Onkyo receiver issues. My HDMI board went out on my TX-NR509. Called Onkyo and they had me ship it to a repair center in Michigan for an "Out of Warranty Repair". The receiver was 27 months old, warranty was for 24 months. They fixed it at no charge to me and had it back within 3 weeks.

ETA: Do wish they would have covered my shipping up there though. That's my only complaint. I did not pay to have it shipped back.

I have two other experience with companies like this.

First was Apple with an iPod Nano that quit working. I made a claim on through their website. Within 3 days I had a brand new iPod and a prepaid box to send the broken one back in. (not to mention the 4-5 times I've brought iPhones to Apple Stores for minor cosmetic blemishes and received refurbished units, no questions asked. Though I doubt they still do that.)

Second was Samsung with a point and shoot camera. It broke several times and every time it would take 10-12 weeks to send it in, get it repaired, and get it back.

sorry, but this post is the only other time I've posted about receivers on here. Can't comment on other people's experiences

I've had an Onkyo receiver since 2008 and never had an issue with HDMI. That must have been before they had board issues.

Just to note, though, these boards are sourced from a single company by several brands. The HDMI board issue is greater than just Onkyo. Check the AV forums to find more info before you buy.

I bought Onkyo 3008 new ($2,099 MSRP) and HDMI board failed right after 2 years. I'm never buying Onkyo receiver again.

New HDMI board will fail again after 2 years. It has the BGA chips on it just like Xbox 360 and PS3.

"reflow" method in the oven will last about 2 months. permanent solution is "reball" method but I can't find anybody that could do it.

just FYI, the problems started *AFTER* the 606 and continued into late 2012/early 2013.

go google it. the issue has been addressed for well over a year now..people are still finding the issue with the 607-616 models (and higher end in tha time frame) and bringing it up.

do y'all bashing on onkyo really think they are blissfully unaware and continuing to build new models with the defect?

If it was a $250 receiver I'd just cut my losses and throw it away. But I'm fricking pissed because my so called Onkyo flagship $2,100 receiver is a brick now.

If you have the original sales receipt then Onkyo will repair it for you out of warranty for the HDMI board problem.

Have you contacted them?

I already bought a replacement below because I can't go months without it. and what's the point if BGA chips on HDMI board fail again after a year or two? It'd be another hassle of calling, dropping off receiver, waiting, etc.
Abandoning lead solder and using BGA chips was a big fail by Onkyo (and other electronics manufacturers)
