So O/T car salesmen, is this a standard practice?
Posted by triggs85 on 8/13/14 at 7:54 pm31
I am in the market for a new vehicle, Up until today I was working with a sales person at a local Chrysler dealership. Dealer 1 found a truck with spec's close but not exactly to what I was looking for including not being the ideal color. We agreed upon a price, however I decided to check one more time before purchasing from Dealer 1. Well a competing dealership found the exact vehicle I'm looking for including color and some extra options all for about $500.00 more then the vehicle from Dealer 1. Being as I'm a nice guy and have been working with Dealer 1, I inform them of the new offer to see if they wished to counter. Here is the reply I get from the sales person.
"You know we can do the same thing but we keep going round and round with calling dealers and busting butt to lock trucks down and looked for Bighorns in the price range you wanted to be and if I would quote you again you'll call them back and tell them what we're doing for you and it'll go round and round, did the best I could, we treat our customers good here in our service department but I can't stop you from buying there and having to go there for service . I thought it was a done deal, looked for the vehicle you gave me specs on and tried to get you as close to budget as possible and gave it my all and that's all I can do. I thought we had a done deal didn't realize you were still shopping because we wouldn't have wasted the other dealers time locking down the truck. "
Apparently I'm supposed to just roll over and accept whatever offer they give me without conducting my due diligence.
A. they "locked down" 1 truck
B. They should understand that I am going to go to every effort up until the point I sign my name to make sure i am getting most truck i can for as little money as I can.
C. I hope their service team is better then their sales team. Last time I checked lecturing your customer isn't exactly your best bet of making that sale.
yes i know tldr

Honestly, the salesperson is probably working a mini deal at this point and is tired of spending so much time with you. He may be more willing to do something if he needs a sale to hit a bonus, but at this point he is either going to win or lose your business right now. Many seasoned sales people will do this. They know they can go catch another, but they aren't going to bend over backwards for a mini deal. There is nothing wrong with what you did. Just go get the truck from the other dealer.

Plan to call them in the morning.
The salesperson screwed this up early. Should have never negotiated a price without a commitment. That's just sales 101. I bet if you can show them the truck the other dealer found and asked them to match that deal they would, but until they get a commitment, they aren't going to put forth any more effort. It just isn't cost effective.

I sent them the VIN when I informed them of the offer. If they would have stopped 8 words into the first sentence they would have had the sale, but the mini-tirade that followed is what drove me away.

Buy truck #2
Take selfie with truck #2 and fish lips at other dealership
Email selfie/fish lips/other dealership pic to salesman and sales manager
Laugh all of the way to the bank
There's nothing wrong with being an a-hole to someone once they have been an a-hole to you. I actually enjoy it

Just out of curiosity, how long have you been working with this salesperson? In hours spent at the dealer or working phones? The salesperson is likely making $100 bucks on this deal, if that. In fact you should call the car lot and tell his boss. At least then he will be fired for being an a-hole, or complimented on doing what his boss told him to do.

I promise you they don't care as much as you think they do.

Wouldn't matter to me. Either way, it would royally piss him off or he wouldn't care at all, who gives a frick because it would be funny

Tell dealer one to go get fricked. Yes he got the price you wanted but not the exact truck you wanted. Dealer 2 got you exactly what you wanted with a few extra options for 500 bucks more. Buy from him and don't look back.

No. It is not standard practice. You would not want to 'lock down' or initiate a trade with another dealer unless you have:
1 a solid commitment from the customer or
2 in rare circumstances, the unit they are procuring for you is one they'd like to have in their inventory even if your transaction falls through.
Talking to you like that, while intrinsically rewarding for the salesperson in that he gets to let off human emotion is dumb to me, as it does not advance his financial goals.

Really, I would almost bet my life that this is just a deal where the nuts have been cut out of the deal and it just isn't worth the effort. If they were making money on you, they'd probably work harder and kiss your arse more. Again, it's nothing you've done wrong. Your job is to save as much money as possible and the sales persons job is to get you to spend more. Don't take it so personally. There comes a point where you've actually won. Dealer 2 has much less time invested and more willing to make the deal. I would bet if you strung them out a little more, you'd get a very similar word track from their sales person. All of this is very common in the business.
