Favorite Radio/TV call that went AGAINST your team?
Posted by TbirdSpur2010 on 8/13/14 at 1:07 pm00
For the one of you who doesn't know on this board, I'm kind of a big Spurs fan After their little redemption tour last season I finally mustered up the courage to watch a replay of game 6 from the 2013 Finals, which SA lost to MIA in memorably excruciating fashion.
I gotta say, NBA announcer Mike Breen's call of the Ray Allen corner three that sent the game improbably to OT gives me chills. High drama in "out to Allen...his three pointer--BAAAaang!!!" Marv Albert is my favorite bball commentator, but Breen nailed that call
What's a radio/tv call that you can enjoy even though it went against your team?

fricking Bramblett and the Kick Six. Appreciate it as a sports fan but fricking kicks me in the nuts remembering being in the stadium.

Jim Henderson and Hokie Gajan's call of John Carney's missed extra point after the miracle last-second TD against Jacksonville in 2003. Hokie just screams "NNOOOOOOO!!!", and Henderson follows it up with "And he misses the extra point! Oh my God, how could he do that!??". I was pissed when it first happened, but it's gotten funnier as the years progress.

Thankfully I was on the right side of this....but hopefully Kentucky fans have come to realize how classic their guy's radio call of the Bluegrass Miracle was.
"There are people on the goalposts. I don't know why"

I remember watching that with my dad and brother while my sister and mom waited in the car (were about to go out to eat). We started going crazy like we were LSU fans. Then started laughing hysterically when we saw the UK fans on the field realized what happened.

That play is still jaw dropping. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.

I truly did feel bad for those guys. Kentucky was finally going to get a win over a ranked team and a win that actually meant something...just to have it yanked away on a fluky miracle play. Kentucky is kinda like the lovable loser in football...if we had done that to Alabama or Auburn, there would have been no feeling sorry for them!

Hard to choose. Our legendary announcer Jon Ward made every call exciting - even when it was the opponents doing good. Most Vol fans would go to the stadium and wear headphones just to hear him call the game or turn down the TV and have him on the radio even though Ward would always be behind what we were seeing. That just didn't matter though, the man had a way of making things exciting no matter who was making the play and regardless of whether or not you already knew what had happened.
If I had to pick an opponents' announcer it would be UGA's. Whoever the guy was that made the radio call on the Hobnail Boot - Munson I think his name was - was EPIC. Not just the line that is regularly cited either but the whole bit that's usually left out. And that was one painful arse play for Vol fans - UGA won in the final seconds.
Sigh, I really miss those old radio guys. They knew how to broadcast for the radio, which is all about building drama, excitement, and telling the listener what it feels like. They painted pictures, told the listener a story/drama so to speak, and ignored trying to keep up with tv (not like they could've anyway). It made things so much more exciting to listen to them.

I agree
I grew up watching Spurs/Aggies/Cowboys games with my Dad with the radio turned up and the TV muted.
Dave South for the Ags (he's so terrible, he's awesome).
Brad Sham for the Cowboys (classic voice IMO).
Bill Schoening for the Spurs (truly one of the best in the biz--he's been the voice of 4 of the 5 Spurs titles, including the latest one).

I dunno why, but I absolutely hate Breen's "Bang!" he so often uses.
Does nothing for me.

Maybe I like it because it reminds me of the Spurs' radio announcer who preceded Schoening, Jay Howard. He used to use "Bang!" a lot, and I grew to like it.

I gotta disagree with you. Breen needs to find something else to say other than "Bang!" every time someone makes a 3.
I'd rather Bob Licht yelling "Bottom!"
Welp, should have read all the way down
