How can you meet people in LSU when you commute from home?

Parents wont let me get an apartment/dorm ( or even help me out, I had 2 jobs this summer). I wanted to joina fraternity, but i might not get a bid. Its pretty depressing going from home to campus, and its kinda hard to meet people. Commuter students from br, How did you meet people or make friends?

My dad told me I had to live in the dorm freshman year. Absolutely the best decision. Made my whole group of friends that year.
