A must read. Some highlights.

quote:

Klinsmann declined to comment for this story, and U.S. Soccer spokesman Michael Kammarman relayed the coach’s reservations. “He doesn’t like the way the media hypes up these young players,” Kammarman says. “He thinks it’s even worse here than it is in other countries. The media is always looking for a young star, and that kind of attention can be really bad for some of these players. Just look at the guys who have dealt with it in the past."

quote:

Some have suggested that Yedlin move full time to midfield. But his skill set, built on quickness and speed more than creativity and technique, would have a defined ceiling if he moved farther upfield. “Could he be a winger? Yeah, sure,” Porter says. “But when you look at the top wingers, he’s never going to be more technical and more clever off the dribble and in his combination and movement than those guys are. He just doesn’t have that. But at right back? With his athleticism, bombing forward, going box to box? Right now, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I mean, he obviously already looks like the right back of the future for our national team. Beyond that, he can be a Champions League right back. He can be that good.”

Its very Grantlandy in its style. It wavers from its lead too much.

The quote from Caleb Porter is very interesting though.

But maybe that's the point. Maybe the wavering style is supposed to mirror both the inconsistency of Yedlin and of the American soccer fan.

I'm more interested in the Klinsmann/Porter view on it. Of course, they're actual soccer coaches, so they know WTF they are talking about, though I think Porter may be overhyping his player a bit much.

I'm on the pump the brakes bandwagon with Yedlin. I'm not sure if he's an elite MLS defender, much less an elite international defender. His game is much better in the attacking third than it is in the defending third, and yet he is not nearly skilled/experienced enough to be an out and out winger. What if he's never anything more than a late game sub who runs really fast at the international level? And what's wrong with that?

That's been my stance on him

ETA - That he should stay at fullback

I think it's pretty safe to say he has a long way to get to this point. I've said all along that he would be a good winger in a 3-man backline system because it would allow him more of the opportunity to push up into the attacking third.

What makes him valuable right back, and he showed this against Belgium, is that his recovery speed and stamina is so fricking good.

So we're just going to ignore his play in the MLS?

He's a good one v one defender. He needs work positionally in space but he's young

a lot of fullbacks in the modern game aren't what you'd call good defenders. as is said in there (and as the legendary clairefontane quote goes) he's too old to gain the requisite technique to be a great winger. but you can't teach that athleticism and you can teach him enough defensive skills/positioning for him to become a great fullback.that's why his next move is so, so important. he needs to pick wisely.

This. He's an incredible athlete, but he could do with working on his defensive abilities. In another league, his tendencies to play too far up the field will be picked apart. If he wants to make it at a high level, he has to learn to actually defend. Yeah, he's blowing by Hazard now, but that's not a long term defensive strategy. He's a positioning liability at times.

I think he's an excellent athlete, and I'd love him to head overseas to hone his defending skills. I just agree with Klinsmann on this one. We need to pump the brakes and let him develop a bit.

No we shouldn't.
I'm not disagreeing on his current ability. It's just that he keeps performing well when put in big situations despite everyone saying he's not actually very good yet.
I've seen him compared to Marvelle Wynne. Is that fair, based on how he's played in international tournaments?

He's still pretty young in defender years, so we'll see how he turns out. I just don't think he'd be getting either this much hype or this much "hate" in his home country if it were any other country. I think they would see him as a promising player and not be so focused on his sometimes naive play in their second or third-rate home league.

This kind of stuff seems little worth saying. Oh he's not a world-class defender yet? No crap, but don't say he can't defend. He has defended world-class players.
"At times" he makes mistakes with positioning? WAAAAAAAA

No that's not fair at all.

Let me be clear, I'm ecstatic as frick as to what Yedlin can become. That said and like everyone else has pointed out, he is still so raw.

I don't hate Spurs like most of this board, but that is not a very smart move at all for him.

I think we're seeing the result of a kid who no one thought was going to make the team coming in and doing quite well. It's hard for a lot of us to imagine having the depth for that sort of thing to happen. Don't get me wrong, we've had some great players. It's just rare that we see one of our fringe players step up and make things happen, and we had three of our youngest do it this summer.

Yedlin just did it multiple times, and that's exciting. He's a player only MLS fans really had any idea existed, and he impressed damn near everyone. I mean, let's be real, not many people can make Hazard look less than explosive, and Yedlin flat out made him look ordinary. His speed off the bench is lethal, but at the highest level, they'll exploit him eventually. I think he has the talent and, hopefully, the drive to continue improving. I'm just glad we took him to Brazil. I have high hopes for him. I just don't want him to crash and burn because we have to find our new messiah.

The problem with using his performance against Hazard as an example is that it's pretty much the definition of small sample size. Many people happened to see that one performance as well as forty-odd minutes against Portugal and Germany.

Say we used the replaced his performance against Hazard and Belgium, with his performance against Diego Fagundez and New England. And in this bizarro, situation millions of Americans saw that game.

Then we're talking about extremely raw player who looked promising in limited action, but who was woeful when given starter's minutes.

TL;DR: Sample size is important
