US History takes a turn for the left this fall

I don't really see a problem with it. They're just presenting facts from a different perspective. History, all history, is good, bad, and ugly.

To the detriment/omission of other facts.
I have no problem with an unvarnished presentation of US History, but tell the whole story.

Well it sounds like the whole point of this class is to supplement the omitted facts that are not discussed in the standard history class.

As a snap shot, I have no problem with presenting the destruction of the Indians but also talk about what the Indians were doing to one another.

in terms of world history, the united states has the least violent and oppressive foundation of any place on this planet
furthermore, the ideas behind the constitution are what pushed us so quickly through this...I'm left with the conclusion that radical leftists are so anti capitalism and anti freedom (really one in the same) that their tactic is to smear the people whose names are associated with building the foundation and framework of the nation.
Christopher Columbus was a murdering murderer...so what? and only the Italians fricking get pissed at the notion
Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and others were remarkable men, they're like the avengers of remarkable people.
It's enough to consider how crazy intelligent and important one of them was, but they all came together to fight loki...to implement radical ideas that have produced the highest standard of living on the planet while giving the most amount of freedoms
and yet, we still practice a perverse form of their ideas...I want more

I agree, but you have to admit that most standard high school history classes omit a lot of the ugly parts of American History. I don't think it's on purpose but rather for the sake of expediency. It's hard to cover 300 to 400 years of history in one year.

I didn't see that in the article. Do you have a link or other proof of this?
This is not unexpected by those of us who oppose common core. Common core is going to either go away or become the focus of an ongoing battle to change the curriculum.
This negative portrayal of America is designed to make American kids ashamed of their country and support the leftist opinion that America is the cause of all of the problems in the world and that we must repent.
I work with a lot of Indians who are over here working because they have work visas and hope to get green cards and, eventually, citizenship. They think America is the greatest place ever and that we are crazy for beating ourselves up over our imperfections. They say that racism is 10 times worse in India than it is here, and laugh at how we somehow think we are the last bastion of racisim.

This is an advanced placement class to prepare kids for college. Kids in AP math don't skip basic algebra classes, but have demonstrated they already understand the material just like these AP history students have done.
College history classes break down certain time periods in order to cover the many different facets of those periods. This class is discussing the dynamics that are generally omitted from standard high school history classes to get these kids prepared for advanced college history courses. Would you have this type of class banned from college campuses?

I taught AP-US History for 33 years, 7 years in Louisiana and the last 26 years in Gwinnett County, GA. I worked for the College Board doing one day workshops to train AP teachers. I retired in 2012, but I still attend the national workshop/meeting and work with several APUSH teachers in several schools as a consultant (not paid).
The new approach to APUSH is not my favorite but it is not some Leftist plot. 75% of what is taught (supporting facts) ares till going to be chosen by the teacher in the classroom. The main things that are changing are:
1) the exam which will feature several questions that can be answered in 1 paragraph
2) a small bit of Indian history between 1400 and 1700 will need to be taught
3) less 19th century history and more post WWII history
Teachers should use some thematic teaching (perhaps teach labor history beginning with cottage industries of the 1700s through industrialism, labor union growth and diminsihment, and current labor situation in terms of production) and problem-centered teaching to get kids ready for that exam. Simply going through history chronologically will not be the best way to prepare kids to earn college credit on that exam although there will still be plenty of chronological teaching that is appropriate.
Teachers will still be able to teach about GW and our historically important documents. It is absurd to think otherwise.
