I am staying for one night, tomorrow night. I normally stay at the W in the french quarter or the royal sonesta. I have stayed in the FQ because i don't have to drive anywhere to go get food or drink. I think I may have been pretty ignorant as I am always by myself walking around thinking I wont get mugged. I have been told that uptown is the place I should stay at.

Should I stick with what I know? Uptown? Garden District? Rates for tomorrow are all within my expense guidelines so where should i stay that is in a "safe(r)" part of town for me to walk to get food/drink? If you could stay at any hotel, which would it be?

:disclaimer: I don't always find higher price means better place to stay (ex. Waldorf)

Last time my wife and I were there we stayed at the Hotel Modern in Lee Cir. The rooms were very small, but it was affordable and I liked that location. Could easily walk to the quarter, or hop on the street car and head Uptown.

If you're not staying at the Roosevelt or the Ritz, you might as well hit up a Day's Inn in Kenner.

I wouldn't be worried about being mugged in the quarter at all.
I can get to better bars and restaurnats in other areas though, especially when it comes to value.

Look at staying along Poydras St or right behind it in the Warehouse District.
Somewhere along Julie or Tchopotoulouse would be ideal.
The Embassy Suites on Julia Street has worked well for some of my friends as well as the Loewes on Poydras.

This is a great location and a nice B&B. I stayed there when my house was getting tented and found it more than agreeable. You can walk to tons of bars, restaurants and stores. Garden District B&B

-The W on Poydras is transitioning to a Le Meridian, will be great, but there may be construction noise.

-Everyone raves about the Roosevelt

-The Sheraton has an awesome executive lounge during weekdays with free gumbo.

-Embassy Suites is a great stay if you're not looking to be downtown.

SPG has a new hotel near the Superdome but doesn't open for a few more months.

Is under renovation being converted to another hotel chain. DO NOT stay there. My last stay was horrible.

Try the Windsor Court if you're a baller.

If you are okay with opaque hotel pricing, you can get a 4 star (most likely Hyatt by Dome) for $68 tomorrow night.

I did it this past weekend, and it was a great place to stay.

But there is a W in the French Quarter. It's on Charters.

OP: Check on Monteleone.

Mea culpa, then. I'm only familiar with the one on Poydras.

Surprisingly the Marriott Courtyard iberville suites is legit. By far the best CY I've ever stayed in and convenient to the good places in the quarter. It's connected to the Ritz as well.

I'm sure it's lovely, but for some reason, B&Bs creep me the hell out. Major eebie jeebies.

My mom's friend only stays in them when she travels. Something about someone's living room and kitchen and food ... terrifying.

Of course, I refused to eat lunch on field trips as a child when we would visit plantations or the Old Governor's Mansion because it smelled old, so I might just be insane.

Lots of confusion on the 2 W hotels. Maybe that's why they're rebranding one.

W New Orleans = Poydras location across from Mothers. Has Whiskey Blue bar inside.

W French Quarter = more expensive, smaller, boutique style hotel right by Jackson Square on Charters St.

How silly. The Monteleone on Royal St. is an amazing "old New Orleans" hotel experience.
