If I had to guess the guys are a mix of Marine Civil Affairs Group to assess and Marine Special Operations for security. I don't know it works in the Army but in the Marines the civil affairs guys don't actually conduct humanitarian operations. They go in and assess what is needed and what can be provided by the US in terms of assistance. This could very well be a precursor to larger US involvement.

ABOARD MILITARY AIRCRAFT, OVER THE BERING SEA — The military has sent 130 additional advisers to northern Iraq to plan for the evacuation of refugees under siege by Islamist militants, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced Tuesday.

"This is not a combat boots on the ground kind of operation," Hagel told Marines at Camp Pendleton in California.
The Marines and special operations forces have been sent to the city of Irbil in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq to assess the humanitarian crisis in the Sinjar Mountains and ways to end it

So is this just a fancy name for a recon unit

quote:Not really, but most of the Marines in the unit are experienced and mature. It's not a primary MOS. Most are at minimum a Sgt before they join the unit and a lot come from the infantry or other combat arms specialties. It's a place guys like to go to get away from the bullshite of a line unit but still get a lot of deployments and stay in the fight. I seriously considered doing it before I switched to TACP.

They really aren't some secret squirrel unit. In any case. It's pure speculation on my part that that's the guys doing this.

I like the historical tie in.

Book it, there are SOs in there to pinpoint ISIS targets. We need to slam that bunch back under their rocks. No way we sit and let them take over the whole ME...even if Obama's *peacemaker* resume is tainted!

Should have known as soon as Obama said "absolutely no more troops in Iraq" that we would be sending more.

Make no mistake about it, ISIS is an international threat. The entire world should take notice of these animals and work to destroy them ASAP.
On another note, I've been listening to HRC (backstabbing Obama) and joining in the GOP chorus about how we should have recognized the moderate in Syria first and armed them. By not doing so we emboldened the extremist (ISIS) to fill the vacuum.
Do people really believe any of this crap? Hillary is such a loser it's pathetic and the whole notion the "moderates" could have defeated Assad is preposterous. I'm not an Obama fan on any level but what was he to do? IMO the US should have sided with Assad from the begining. The radical Sunni are the enemy. By all intents and purposes Assad didn't try to wipe out Christians or any religion. Now, we have helped arm the most well organized and funded extremist group in the world ISIS.

Interesting how history repeats itself. It's also very sad.

Every president puts troops places to do shite and no one has any idea.

We have forces working in Northern Iraq that nobody is talking about.

Why the continual use of the word "advisors"? Why not call them what they are?
I know it's not a popular stance, but I'm glad those guys are going in to tear sh*t up. I feel we have a moral responsibility when others just continue to sit on their hands and do nothing.

I know, I'm not against it. I just think it's funny/tragic what a flake our POTUS is.

It's a tradition going back to at least Vietnam, if not before.
The idea is that they're supposed to be training the locals (ARVN, Hmong warlords, Pashtun tribesmen, Kurds, etc.) how to fight effectively. That doesn't mean they aren't actively taking part, just that their aim is to be training htem.
