Just moved to BR, where are your favorite places to eat? Where can I get some good local cuisine?
Posted on 8/12/14 at 3:57 pm to pdh901
BR is full of chain restaurants

All the chains make up one helluva culinary scene. Start with Red Lobster then move on the Chili's. After that splurge on some Outback....

The burrito shop at Gardere and Burbank

Monjunis - Sweet red sauce italian...usually solid.
Chimes - Good beer selection. Good food, great for gamedays
Sammys - Not sure the consensus on this board. Much better off hitting the Chimes
Rama - Great Thai food. Get there early as they are lightly staffed
Thai Kitchen - More thai food, Rama is better though
Chelseas - Good soups, salads, and sandwiches. Has live music sometimes. Decent bar. I recommend, like many others, the chicken mojo poboy.
Louisiana Lagniappe - Excellent all the times I have been. Get the Fish en Pappilote (spell check?) They do not take reservations.
Ruth's Chris - Consistently the best steak in town. Also a very good lunch deal, can get like a pretzel bun burger, wedge salad, and side for 12 dollars.
Rum House - Have not been yet, but only hear good things. Always packed.
Stabs - Outside Baton Rouge , in Central. Very good steaks and other items. I would say it is one of the most beautiful restaurants in BR area. Steaks not as good as Ruths though.
Parrains - Your cajun / fried seafood fix can be had here. Fried Stuffed Shrimp are killer.
Galatoires - Haven't been there either. Getting a lot of love here lately, especially for lunch deal.
J. Alexanders - Yes, a chain. But we have always had good service there and food has never been bad. Nice bar area
Omi - Japanese and Chinese menus. You can do a search and read a lot about the place here on the food board. I can't wait to go back.
Sweet and Sour pork was excellent.
Reginellis Pizza - Have been impressed the couple times I had it. Calzones are also good.
Where not to go right off the top of my head
Roccos
Brewbachers
After seeing a following post recommending Robertos River road, I am going to do the opposite and advise you to stay away. Much better food to be found in Baton Rouge than in that shite hole.
If you want a drive outside of Baton Rouge, Houma's House is where it is at.

Louie's Cafe is my favorite place in the city. It's a diner. They make the best hash browns on earth and good hamburgers.
Chelsea's Cafe is a casual dining place under the Perkins Road Overpass with a decent beer selection and tasty dishes.
City Pork is near Chelsea's. They have good sandwiches and make a lot of cured meat in house.
The Chimes is an institution by the North Gates of LSU with a great beer selection and good hamburgers and sandwiches. The owners also have a seafood place, Parrains, which is a little more upscale.
There are a lot of good Greek/Lebanese places in town, oddly enough. I think Albasha is the best.
For good Italian food, hit Digiulo Brothers. It's got a nice atmosphere there.
There are a ton of good Vietnamese places down Florida Boulevard. I'm partial to Cafe Dang.
Omi is the place to go for Chinese.
Ninfa's is probably the best Tex-Mex in town. We're partial to Superior Grill, they have good Margaritas.
I think Doe's Eat Place is the best steak in the city. They have a good bar in there too.
For a nice date place and a little road trip, go to Roberto's River Road restaurant.
EDIT: Crap, I forgot Beausoleil. That may be the best restaurant in town, pound for pound. Really good brunch.
And I only ate at Ruffino's once, but it was quite good. All of the ESPN types eat there when they're in town for LSU games.

And ignore all the assholes who always bitch about chain restaurants and B.R. It's played out. Yeah, there are chain places here -- like every other city in America. It doesn't take much effort to find good local places.

Oh, and avoid Boutin's like the plague. It's the worst restaurant in Baton Rouge. It's worse than Nagoya, where I once got crippling food poisoning.
