12 hunert budget

I like the looks of the Remington R1 carry...
But for the same price, I could own the Colt.
(or wait for some guy to lose his Dan Wesson because he needs money?)
Kimbers are pretty, but I don't want a Kimberly.

I need a mid range commander... What is the best for under 12?

Ruger SR1911 commander. You should be able to find it for under 800.

I have a colt commander in SS and it's my favorite handgun by far. You can pick up a standard colt commander for around $950. If I were you, I would also check out the colt commander XSE. You can't go wrong with a colt and if you're gonna go with a 1911, you might as well get the real deal.

The Ruger gets a lot of love, and rightfully so for the price, but with a $1200 budget you can get into another level of 1911.

Edit: Or better, buy 2 SR1911's and save up for a shoulder rig.

Kimber Pro Rapter II

My buddy has this gun. By far one of the smoothest guns I've ever shot.

The Colt Commander was the first handgun I ever bought. I loved it, kept me feeling safe for years behind the bar. It was stolen along with 4 other handguns.

That slide is far too ugly. (really) I do like the back end bobtail... If S&W had that same gun with another slide and an internal extractor, I would maybe want.
Is still a pretty gun... sorta.

Colt Lightweight Commander XSE if you are looking to carry the gun at all.

Your budget will give you some money left for customization.

Another excellent choice is the Colt Wiley Clapp edition Commander. Lots of custom features out of the box.

I do on mine. Have spare sets if I ever go back to standard thickness grips too.

I agree w/ Weagle. If the gun will be used for concealed carry and you're ready to spend up to $1200, I'd get one w/ an alloy frame (and a bobbed frame if possible).

You hit the nail on the head. Exactly what I paid for this one.

(sorry for the quality of my phone pics)

Sort of wanted the xse so it would match the rail gun, but I am not too picky. It doesn't have a dove tailed front sight and the dove tail on the rear sight is smaller than the Novak cut on the rail gun as well. But they are white dot and seem easy enough to find the target (without having shot it yet.) Also the mag well bevel is just a tad smaller.
2 things I like better than the xse is no front serrations, and no ambi safety.

They did have a Wiley Clapp model, but it was $1450 ... and of course the Ed Browns had me drooling at the store.
