Universal has acquired the rights to The Vampire Chronicles
Posted by theunknownknight on 8/11/14 at 11:21 am11
For those that don't know what I am talking about:
Movies in the universe of Interview with the Vanpire might be kicking off with real intention (hopefully they redo Queen of the Damned :yak:)
LINK
If they can cast Lestat correctly and get a great director this series could be epic.

The books in ‘The Vampire Chronicles’ series include: ‘Interview with the Vampire’, ‘The Vampire Lestat’, ‘The Queen of the Damned’, ‘The Tale of the Body Thief’, ‘Memnoch the Devil’, ‘The Vampire Armand’, ‘Merrick’, ‘Blood and Gold’, ‘Blackwood Farm’, ‘Blood Canticle’, and the upcoming ‘Prince Lestat’. I keep seeing the number 13 bandied about with these films so one could easily assume that it also features the two novels in the ‘New Tales of the Vampires’ which include ‘Pandora’ and ‘Vittorio the Vampire’.
This is a huge win for Rice and fans of her work as long as they are able to properly bring the works to life on the big screen. While many have fond memories of the original ‘Interview with the Vampire,’ they also most likely have quite distasteful memories of ‘Queen of the Damned.’ With massive ongoing works becoming the norm in Hollywood, I imagine they would be able to score some good actors willing to sign long term contracts if this was pitched right. At least I like to hope so.

I sincerely hope they don't frick these up

Interesting. I enjoyed all of these except for how cute and giddy childish she made Lestat in Tale of the Body Thief and Memnoch the Devil. Great stories fricked up by some weird character treatment.

I thought the early books in the series were very well done. And, perhaps counterintuitively, the parts that dealt with the various characters' human, pre-vampire lives were the strongest parts.
One quirk of the series though might be hard to pull off in a series of movies. I'll leave some
S P O I L E R
S P A C E
for those who haven't read the books and want to see the movies fresh.
What I'm talking about is Rice's tendency to take semi-villainous characters from one book and tell the next story from their point of view making them sympathetic and making them the protagonists in the next book.
She did it with Lestat and then again with the "cannibal" sisters. Even to an extent with Armand and maybe Marius.
I'm not sure how that would work in a series of movies. Although Game of Thrones pulled off some things that were kind of similar on TV.

I think that would work OK in a series of movies since they aren't just pure re-tellings of the same plot. The Vampire Lestat would be a good flick I think if they did it right.
Are they looking at a complete reboot? ignoring the two already portrayed movies?

I just hope the slew of YA vampire series and the waning interest brought on by all of the Twilight copycats doesn't dilute the interest in Rice's series onscreen. Her work is on such a higher level, and much of today's target audience is too unfamiliar with her brilliance.

Whats going to happen is that they are going to frick up the inspiration to keep up with the inspired (twilight).
Its why im afraid to see the Giver. I feel the book that started the whole hunger games, divergent, genre is going to look be tweaked to look like those movies.

I would imagine they will tamp down the homo-eroticism from most of the books.
I actually didn't mind Interview although some of the plot changes were a bit odd.
Queen was an abomination.
Would love to see The Vampire Lestat done well, but it would be a massive budget for all of the various time periods.
I see them using the books as an outline because there are too many risque themes for big budget approval. Certainly aren't going to show Lestat drinking blood from Christ.

Why on earth would you assume that?

Needs to be at least two movies IMO. It's my favorite book of the series.

How many big budget movies in the history of Hollywood have gay or bisexual characters as the main character?
That is why I assume they will either tone down or almost completely remove the homo-eroticism.

Well I can think of three mega hits that are just dripping with homoeroticism.
Top Gun
Rocky 3
LOTR: The Return of the King

Not remotely the level in Anne Rice novels which range from homo-eroticism to straight out gay.
Not going to happen in a big budget film. I could be wrong but I doubt it.

Tale of the Body Thief and The Vampire Armand would be 2 great movies.
I DO NOT want to see a reboot of Interview With the Vampire at all.
The Vampire Lestat could be one of the greatest productions ever made if done right.

Yay more vampire flicks

If they did it right, the "Vampire" parts of it wouldn't be that prominent. The books were really about existential angst, loneliness and inability to connect with others more than anything.
Heck, Memnoch the Devil had hardly any vampire stuff in it at all. I think it's roots were Rice searching for answers to some age old questions.

That's exactly what they were. She pretty much said so herself when she released "Christ The Lord"

I like Interview with the Vampire a lot, but not pumped for this news. I'm trying to think how awesone it would have to be to break thru my vampire saturation.
