It's time for the NFL to treat the flag with respect.

With the NFL season starting I'm sure we're going to see another season of giant flags horizontally displayed across the field.
Totally inapropriate.
A flag must:
1) Never be used as a prop for a show.
2) Never be displayed horizontally, always aloft or displayed on a wall.
3) Never be gripped during the national anthem.
4) According to military regulations, a military member must stand at attention and/or salute during the national anthem. There are no exceptions. How can this be done while gripping a flag? How do they get around this?
Totally inapropriate.

Where'd you get these rules? Flags are displayed horizontally frequently as a part of military ceremonies / honors. The funeral of a service member is the most prominent example.
And service members bearing a flag are not required to salute during the national anthem. As you pointed out, they can't. And trust me, they - service members, not JROTC or marching band members - wouldn't be bearing the colors in uniform in an unsanctioned manner.
Other than a flag touching the ground I cannot recall the Stars and Stripes being disrespected in all the years I've watched football.
Your respect and enthusiasm for the flag are laudable but your cause is suspect.
ETA: I think you're hanging your hat on its use as "a prop for a show." The flag is not a prop during the national anthem. Rather, it's focus of the enterprise.

Agreed, tighten up on the regs too.

It pisses me off how the refs just throw the flags on the ground all willy nilly..

But how else will the Corps. USA keep us in line...w/o phony prop shows and symbolism that died 100 years ago?

I thought this thread was about officials throwing flags horizontally across the field until I got to the list

Lol at must. Free speech allows any use of the flag.
